...type a response to a thread, then just say "The Hell with it" and close the tab?

All the time.. probably 5-6 times a day. Almost this thread.

I often do the "Well that just seems too negative and would bring down the thread" thing and hit the back button.

Plenty of times. Usually when you realize what you say won't change any one's mind, or can be taken as offensive. (You know that whole internet sarcasm thingy...)

Fairly often. More so with starting new threads. Today alone I typed up and deleted threads about trip suggestions and modern transmitter key replacement.
