So, with the planned steering wheel swap on my miata, the concern was raised about the new airbag being a two stage.
Since i kind of like living, i want to confirm that the system will work properly if its ever needed.
How do i do that? New wheel and airbag are from a early 2000s mazda6, so at least they are plentiful. I dont mind blowing one in the name of safety.
So, i guess this is a learn me intentionally setting off an airbag inside the car thread.

Main thing is whether there is a signal to fire. Other than that how would you ever know on any given airbag without setting it off - is it a takeda?
Best plan, don't crash.
Scan SRS to be sure its alive. Plug bag in. Clear codes. No warning light, all is good.

How do i do that? Never really screwed with airbags before.
Most people trick a friend into sitting on it and then supply 12v to the trigger lines

There's a youtube series called "Is it a good idea to microwave this?", and they have an episode featuring airbags... :)
In reply to Dusterbd13:
If you have disconnected the airbag and turned the key on, it will set a permanent code that can only be cleared with a scan tool. If you haven't, see if the SRS bulb self checks when you start the car. If it does, and then goes out, its all fine, unless somebody has removed the bag and soldered a resistor in its place.
So, find somebody with a decent scan tool and scan it.
Careful blowing one in the car. A lot of them shoot the cover into the windshield when they deploy.
Other than that, I've got nothing.
I don't know about a Mazda6 but on my Mazdaspeed Miata it can be tested by an uninsured known by the police gang banger pull out of an alley without slowing down right in front of you.
