Been thinking about upgrading my phone. If I can keep my current plan, I'm debating between the HTC 10 and LG V20. Both have removable batteries and microSD slots. Anyone have either phone or have recent (~3 years) experience with those 2 brands?

I can buy both for similar $$, but after reading some reviews. I'm leaning towards the V20 unless the hive has overwhelming positives about HTC.

I've owned two LG handsets and two HTC  handsets . I won't buy another HTC.

I have an LG G5 that I'm probably going to have to replace soon, and its only just over a year old.

TL;DR The HTC 10 is the same phone as the Google Pixel except the Google phones get the AMOLED screen instead of LCD and different button placement.

I'm quite happy with my HTC 10. Had it for 1.5 years. My brother got a 10 at the same time. He's also happy with it. Bought it new thru Sprint via our work plan. My wife wanted an upgrade recently so I bought a used HTC 10 in new condition for $230. She loves it.

I've seen friends and family members have issues with their LG phones in the past few years. I like their design, but the reliability issues people have suffered makes me love my HTC phones even more.

My last 4 smartphones have been HTC. They have all been solid and reliable. Every 2 years when I upgrade to a new phone I pass my old phone along to my cheapass friends/family members. Which means those phones are still going strong 6-8 years in. My HTC M8 is being abused by my cousin and my HTC Evo 4G LTE is still used by my coworker. The other coworker is still using the old original HTC Evo.

What's wrong with it? Mine is almost a year old, and does need a new battery, but the $40 for a new battery is better than anything I've seen on the upgrade path this year.

I had an LG G4 before this, absolutely awesome phone, except for the hardware faults, that LG was very happy to replace. The G4 actually had a better single camera I preferred to the dual cameras on the G5. Manual mode is still awesome though, and takes great pictures.

Either way, you're not looking at top of the line or brand new phones, so you should be fine. It's android, you can make them however you want them to be.

If I really had to pick a new or favorite phone to recommend it would be the Galaxy Note 2 or the Palm Treo 750, but unfortunately those aren't options anymore.

New batteries are less than $15 now on amazon even for a factory one. It has gotten really slow, especially noticeable when typing text messages, the Wi-Fi connection is also extremely slow and will rarely go over 15 mbps. It sometimes wont even play through a youtube video without stopping several times when connected to wifi. My dad has one also and I have tried running a speed test on one of the various websites with them sitting next to each other and mine is always a lot slower. The biggest problem though is that I often need to use it for directions while driving and it won't stay connected or it will kinda work but be really inaccurate in determining the location or really slow.  Im not very impressed because I still owe $350 to at&t for it but its out of warranty and doesn't do what I need it to do anymore.

E36 M3, ok. That's good to know then. That it isn't just me having navigation issues. I suspect this will be the cause of replacement like the weak power connectors were in the G4. Sprint was nice enough to fudge the paperwork with the G4 to upgrade me early when it died last year, and I'm hoping they'll do it again with this phone. Could try an independent store instead of a corporate store, they might be willing to replace the phone or try to upgrade you since you still have payments on it. I haven't dealt with AT&T at all in 12 years though, so I don't know how friendly they might be.

When I head to MD later this afternoon I'm going to try out a different navigation app than maps, most likely Waze, to see if it's specifically the phone or just google maps being stupid.

I had always heard bad things about LG phones.. Which I ignored when I bought a Nexus 5. Stopped charging after a couple months. Never again....

To tk8398:

You try clearing space on your phone? My last one had the slowness issue whenever storage dropped below a certain amount. Copy pictures off phone, clear cache or delete apps and it was golden.

I've had a Nexus 5 for a couple of years and it still appears to be working fine. The only reason I "upgraded" that line to a Motorola G4 was that I needed support for the newer T-Mobile frequencies. I wouldn't necessarily rule out an LG phone based on that experience.

That said, one thing I'd look into before making a decision on a phone is how often they get Android (security) updates. Google pushes them out once a month, but not a lot of manufacturers then integrate them in their phones. Given that there are some areas in Android that notoriously require fixes regularly (like the media player framework) I'd prefer a manufacturer that provides reasonably up to date fixes. IIRC the only ones who currently do that are Google with the Pixel phones and I think Samsung.

Of course the other option is to root the phone and install a custom ROM, but not everybody wants to do that.

I've had a couple LG phones, including my current Nexus 5X. This 5X is a replacement, the first one boot-looped itself to death (VERY common failure, mine did it under warranty fortunately). This one has recently started to occasional stop responding and shutdown... Which is what the last one did before shooting craps. Battery life after six months has been awful, too.

After 3 Google Nexus devices in a row (but no pixel) I will probably try an iPhone next. Blasphemy, I know.

Tl;dr not sold on LG phones.

The iPhone 6 has a known battery/charging issue that I have now seen on three of them. It causes the phone to basically die if it gets below fifty percent charge.  All my daughters phones have died this way and all were replaced under warranty or insurance. The most recent one I replaced today with a 7. They  are not suppose to have this issue.  I really like my iPhone. I got it this spring and it took about a week for me to get use to it.  I will never go back to android based phones. The iPhone just works.

Wait, you know of 3 iPhones that died, but iPhones "just work"? cheeky

I, too have heard the horror stories about LG phones.  However, I had a G3 a few years ago and never had a problem with it, and the new V30 is looking like the class of the field in larger phones, especially if you're like me and can't stand Samsung's curved edges.  The Pixel 2 is on it's way soon, too, but without a headphone jack, if that matters to you.  My first-gen Pixel XL (made by HTC) has been awesome so far, and I plan on getting at least another year out of it.

It is an i6 problem.  Fixed it am told with the i7.  My i7 has been flawless.
