I saw that. Whatever someone did to stir up the karma over there they need to knock that E36 M3 off.

Yeah it was an interesting weekend ,

First time I had my phone tell me an earthquake was coming !

And then I did not feel anything  but I was 50 miles away from Ojai .

My phone also got tropical storm warnings 2-3 times

It could been a lot worse and I think it was down in Baja  which did not get reported.

Having lived through northridge quake, losing my house (red tape foundation), drinking fema water for 63 days, freeways collapsed where we couldn't get out of the city, waiting in line every morning, this wasn't anything - comparatively.

Glad that it passed.

Yeah.... the hype does not really match the reality.   We (north west of LA) got 3.5" of rain yesterday, which is a lot, since yearly average is around 15-20, but not exactly world ending.   Sitting here thinking rain in August is cool and feeling the house wobble was a bit of a "yeah, just what the news needs!!"  kind of moment.

I am an experienced earthquake surfer ( was in SF for Loma Prieta, and in Northridge for Northridge!) and could immediately tell it was a ways away, and I was pretty close (maybe 15 miles south).  If the quake is right below you (as a 5.5 was after Northridge) it's more like someone hits the ground underneath you with a giant sledge hammer, just a big bump.  When you are farther away, you get more of rolly polly thing (SF was VERY rolly polly in SF, since it was actually well south of SF).

Certainly, there are areas in SoCal at least, that don't cope well with lots of water (canyons, deserts, burn areas), but most of the "disaster" is simple flooding because of clogged storm drains.  No high winds materialized (which I prepared for, but we get Santa Ana's so that is not new either).  The warnings are pretty silly also.  Lots of warning of flash floods and such, but they cover entire towns, most of which is no where near a flood basin or wash!

Oh....  I did get a notice on my phone to take cover because there was an earthquake warning!   I got the warning after riding the wave, standing up and walking to the bathroom and seeing if my wife noticed.... not terribly useful, in my case at least, a good 1 minute late!

The day before the quake I heard an interview on the radio of a woman who lived half time in southern California, and half time on Maui.  She said her friends were telling her that disasters were following her around, and her reply to them was she wasn't going to worry about it until there was an earthquake too.  I was hoping they'd track her down and interview her again to see what she thought today.

I was about 30 miles South East of Ojai when the quake hit yesterday...not a big deal at all.

Anyway, I remember reading of a guy that was in Nagasaki on August 6th, 1945 when the city got nuked.  He said the hell with this and jumped on a train headed to Hiroshima to stay with his grandmother where it'd be nice and safe.

I think if it was my mom she would have told me! Although I'm not sure which island their Hawaii house is on, and they aren't in SD "proper" they live a few miles north of La Jolla.

Don't trust what you hear on the news ha

Also Ventura county, felt the shaker but it didn't move anything. First time feeling one from the second floor.

Saw plenty of accidents on the freeways yesterday but no one seriously hurt.

Watched a Mercedes get punted up an embankment back end first and 90 degrees to the road. Still trying to figure out the physics of that one.

Been through too many hurricanes but, as far I can remember, just one earthquake–and not a major one. But I remember thinking, Is this really an earthquake on Long Island?

Years ago I felt two small earthquakes in Oklahoma, it was a really bizarre feeling both times. They were small though, you could just feel some vibration, not things falling off the walls or anything.

Surprisingly enough, Charleston SC has a minor fault running near it. We even have our own seismic zone.

FIRST ALERT: South Carolina's fault lines and earthquake history

I've felt the earthquakes and dealt with the hurricanes. Of the two, I'll take a hurricane any day. I can see them coming and get prepared for them. Having both on the same day might be a little extreme.

They don't have maps for earthquakes. Speaking of the tropics...

There was one in IL back in the mid-2000's. It was around 5am, as I'd just got up & was leaning against the kitchen counter facing south. I felt the wave move though the house(and me) quickly from south to north, within a fraction of a second. It was so quick I wasn't really sure what it was.

Thankfully it wasn't strong enough to cause any damage, but it sure was a weird & disconcerting feeling to experience it.

I just realized this map is staying current. It looks nothing like it did when I first posted it.

I'm kind of surprised.
