It's hot out. I like to drink milk. But milk when it's hot out is a bad choice.
We had the HVAC guy come out and check on our ac unit which is not cooling at all. Bad compressor. He also said it's not replaceable.
We don't have $2,500 for a new ac. While I don't think AC guy is full of it, why can't you just replace the compressor? Maybe this brand is unique?
If I decided to go used, what should I look for? The house is about 1,200sqft. Not sure of the size of the outside unit or the brand. I'll edit this once I get home. The condenser in the furnace looks tip top. Can it be reused?

You can change just the outside unit, but it might be too old and use the old freon. If that's the case, it will be more expensive than a whole new system.
R22 prices are insane right now. I am sure that's what you have.
I'd get another quote from someone else. Just so that I can compare.

it really depends on how the compressor went out, if it burned up then it contaminated the whole system and you'll have to upgrade, you should be able to smell that. Go out to the condenser unit and take a picture of the data plate then google the serial and or model number and you can see whats are available.
It certainly is possible to replace just the compressor and keep your existing air handler. I had an HVAC contractor do exactly that back when we were getting ready to sell my wife's house right after we got married. The existing unit crapped out and I didn't want to invest in a brand new system. I let my guy know that I wanted to minimize the cost of repair and he made us a deal on a compressor unit that he had come back from a job that was the right size for the existing air handler. At the time, I was working in the field, so I knew who to talk to. Finding someone willing to do just the compressor may be difficult.
