So here is the deal. I have been having some hip pain issues(getting looked at on Wednesday) and the ND has been killing my hip because of the dead pedal position so I have been driving my land cruiser with its whopping 13mpg highway. I have an 80 mile round trip commute 5 days a week, you see the issue here.

80 mile round trip commute. 25000miles a year on my daily alone. I think i have put 5000 on my Land cruiser this year as well.

I have documented my commute for the past week and it is: 36 miles one way with an average speed of 62mph in the morning and 53ish in the afternoon. 30 miles of it is Interstate.

Cant charge at work, closest level 2 charger is 7 miles past work.

Can only level 1 charge at home. getting level 2 set up at home would realistically require a full house rewire(2 seperate living spaces on 1 breaker box at the moment).

I need something with a respectable 30-50 and 50-70mph time because of the drivers around here forcing me to have to pass on the right uphill at times.(because people from FL dont know how to drive in the mountains or maintain speed)

Would like similar highway performance to my ND1 RF.

It seems like a BEV or a Plug in Hybrid just wont work for my commute and the only hybrid that might meet my requirements is the Ioniq Blue.

I cant stand how the prius drives which likely means that throws the Camry, corolla and prius hybrids out.

So Ioniq Blue or rotate through cheap 08+ avalon's? or other options?

Accord or Camry V6 (non-hybrid) would be my first two options that combine good power and mileage. The hybrids do even better mileage-wise, but won’t have the same acceleration.

if you’re looking new, the Accord 2.0T would be a great option (even comes in a 6spd manual).

leaning heavily toward rotating through avalon's since they carry less of a price premium than the camry v6

Why is it that you think a PHEV won't work? Theyre just a better version of a regular hybrid.

I have a Fusion Energi PHEV. My commute is about 20 miles each way and with a 20-21 mile all electric range I can usually do one way without gas on my commute, and the other direction is typically 45-60mpg. In the 14k miles I've had it, I've dragged the lifetime fuel economy average from mid 40s to 86.6mpg by the end of this summer. It looks and drives like any other Fusion out there, it just does a lot of that driving silently.

You wouldn't get that economy with your longer commute, but finding a PHEV that could do one leg of the commute in electric mode could give you similar economy. Something like a 1st gen Volt would probably be really close. Gen 2 volt would be even better, but price goes up and you might not be able to fully charge each night on a level 1 charger. Typically, level 1 charging adds about 3 miles of range per hour, so if it's plugged in for 10 hours from the time you get home to the time you leave you'd have about 30 miles of electric range every morning assuming the car has that much capacity. Most people are home longer than 10 hours before leaving for work the next day too, but you'd have to do your own math.

You might look at Optima/Sonata hybrids.  The Korean tax means they should be pretty cheap compared to the others, and the have a 6spd auto instead of CVT.  A few years of the sonata are kinda fugly, but the optima looks pretty good?

I'm loving my Bolt for my 80 miles commute. It's less complicated than a hybrid, and it has plenty of range if you can figure out your charging issue.

BEV and wire in a 240V x 15A plug - no need for full L2 but L1 won't do.

it depends on how it goes on wednesday buy i am looking at just rotating through $10k 100k mile avalons.

I am not familiar with BEV. Does that just mean battery EV? I'm used to those being called EVs, but I guess with all the variations, adding the B makes sense to clarify.

In reply to T.J. :

Yes, BEV = Battery Electric Vehicle

PHEV = Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

A lot of automakers are talking about "electrified" models right now when they discuss their future product lineups and that descriptor typically includes PHEVs as well as BEVs. So if Car Company X says, "We'll have 20 new electrified models available to the public in 2022", a bunch of those are likely to be PHEV versions of existing vehicles rather than all new, fully electric vehicles.

PHEVs are also eligible for partial tax credits like BEVs because they tend to travel a large percentage of their miles without using their ICE.

Basically, anything that can be plugged in and charged is usually lumped into the "electrified"  category by governments and automakers, so some clarification is needed between PHEVs and BEVs.

Im in a similar situation.  I used to have charging stations at work but at the new job no chargers and I havent had my L2 installed at the house.   I can fully charge from the time I get home to the time I leave for work and I have a 35-40 mile range.  That gets me mostly to the office in the morning and I run in hybrid mode the rest of the time.  Still getting well above 60mpg combined.  Don't rule out a PHEV.

Are 100k mile Avalons really going for $10k? For what it's worth, mostly newer Fusion PHEVs in the 60k-90k range are also in that price range, even the top Titanium trim level.

There are some 50-60k miles avalons in that range too. And i was looking specifically at 2gr avalons.  My parents had a fusion and I was really not a fan. It had a recall about every month we had it.  I am looking at avalons because they are actually fast for what they are.
