So one area dealer just started selling Hyundai, and they have radio comercials for it. The woman on the radio kept prononcing it Hon-Day.

I thought butchering the pronunciation of Hyundai went out of style 15 years ago...

Some of Hyundai's more recent commercials used to say, "It's pronounced Hun-Day, like Sunday."

MrBenjamonkey, since you're in South Korea, what's the KDM pronunciation for the crooked H brand?

It is pronounced High-and-dry.

Cause that is where they (used to) leave you!

X2. If I'm feeling rebellious, I might throw a bit of yuh in after the H. Just to irk people, you know. A friend of mine still calls them low-end-ays.

And Toyotas are Sell-EE-ka, not Sell-i-ka.

There. That should start another regional war. My job here is done.

When I was in Korea I always heard it pronounced hoon-dye or even oon-dye. Hyundai America Corp. seems to call it whatever they think Americans are most likely to accept.

My general manager at a previous employer (Tier 1 supplier to Hyundai and otehrs) insisted upon calling it "Hi-un-di-eye" - he was an idiot.

I always pronounce it like Sunday, but that's because a local dealer (Bill Munday) ran ads for a long time that said, "Buy a Hyundai, from Munday on Sunday!!"

When I was sponsored by Hyundai, they all pronounced it Hi un die That was in the 90's. I think it's kind of morphed into Hunday, or Hundie now.

I either use the 2 syllable Hun-day, or the 2.5 syllable He-un-day. I do like the top gear version though - high-un-die

I pronounce it "Hyoon-die" because there's a bloody 'y' in it and my little amount of Japanese taught me to pronounce "ai" after a consonant as a long 'i' sound.

But for me, I place a greater accent on the "die" part. Because there is only one place for them to be.....

Wikipedia says it's pronounced "Hyon-dae", so there's another opinion.

From the corporate level (when I worked there) the correct HMA pronunciation was "Hunday like Sunday". Anything else and the Koreans thought we were butchering it.

The Brits probably think we butcher jaguar and the Germans think we butch BMW...

Our local dealer says "HON-day" too. I swear he's trying to confuse the casual shopper into thinking they sell Accords.

I prefer the "like Sunday" pronunciation.

I know this- don't count on the local dealer ads to be right. We have a guy in Denver who sells "Mish-a-bishie" cars.

Our local dealer pronounces them a LOT like Honda. To the point where I think it's on purpose.
