Five Finger Death Punch is the new Pantera.

Their stuff is brutal, technical, gets stuck in your head, and I absolutely cannot get enough of it.

Yes they are a bit more "mainstream" than Pantera was, but I think the mainstream wasn't ready for Pantera's awesomeness. Ivan is also a huge Pantera fan.

Don't throw things at me, this was just an observation I made recently.

Bang on, guys! \m/

they are one of the better newer bands out there... you can tell that they have large arenas in mind when they write their songs- which is something that not too many bands do any more...

if they are the new Pantera, then Avenged Sevenfold is the new Iron Maiden..

I'll agree with that. I like some FFDP songs more than others, and it was the same with Pantera.

That song they just released is pretty good. I haven bought a cd in a long time and I think the last metal cd I bought was A7X first album and I might buy this.

Oh wait, this is some other highly opinionated topic...carry on!

Pantera sucked after they moved past glam rock and started screaming toneless political crap over interesting riffs. Their best song ever made was "Power Metal".

This is the Internet, therefore I am right and the 99% of the populace who disagree with me are merely uncultured heathens who don't appreciate double-kick drums and POWER METAAAAAAAAAAL

(FFDP has some cool stuff tho)

I've tried but I just can't get in to them.

I'm really REALLY diggin' Mastodon right now. I can't believe I had never listened to any of their stuff before.

Yeah I loves me some Mastodon. They are about the best at the Prog Metal wall of sound style. Their songs can sound SO different from one another. The entire Crack The Skye album is just good zone out stuff. Check out "cut you up with a linoleum knife"

there are Pantera hipsters?

actually, now that i think of it, metal fans kind of invented the "i liked them before they were cool" thing... so, yeah, never mind..

regarding Five Finger Death Punch: i posted the video to their new song "Lift Me Up" on my facebook wall a couple of weeks ago... one of my cousins said that they kick ass, but he didn't know who that other voice was in that song... i was like "dude, that's Rob Halford of Judas Priest" and he said "who?"... i told him to look it up.. in his defense, he's only 23 years old and grew up listening to country...

FFDP seems a little.... preachy to me. That being said, I do enjoy them from time to time. I've been deeper into metalcore lately, All That Remains, Shadows Fall, and the like.

Listening to Naked Burn right now by Mastodon. Can really hear the Black Sabbath/Melvins influence........really really great stuff.

Dimebag Darrell aka Diamond Darrell was pretty berkeleying awesome. Gotta go see if I can find some Cowboys From Hell in the stack of old CDs. That might have been the "cassette years" for me though.

FFDP is meh... ok. Not Pantera.

Whoa there, no need to get rude and start throwing names around

Tongue-in-cheek forced opinionation aside, I started listening to Pantera with the usual Cowboys/Trendkill/Driven albums. But after a while they weren't doing it for me anymore, like they were missing refinement. Like, it could be so much more if they'd have just toned down the shrieking and noise.

Most of their glam stuff does indeed suck, but Power Metal remains one of my favorite songs from any band. It just works.

A good rule of thumb is if it sounds like they're having fun while recording the song. A lot of their later stuff... didn't. Not all of it, but a lot of it.

That's because Phil Anselmo was being a doucher.

I have to admit, I wasn't much of a (current) Metal fan until I heard some of the stuff C (ex-SWMBO) was listening to. FFDP was probably the first one where I asked her, "..who the hell is that?!?"

Besides, without the initial interest, I never would have heard of Dope.

I never got into them. For me, it's pretty much thrash metal. Or Maiden, of course. And Rush.
