As stupid as this sounds, the safety placement of the 500 was the deciding factor in my purchase of a 20ga 500. It's idiot proof.
Not stupid at all, I like my $200 18" Chinese 870 clone, but all crossbolt safeties suck, and they suck double if you're left handed. If I had to do it again I'd buy a used 500/590.
