The Dire Wolf has been brought back from extinction.
I mean, I respect the level of technical achievement, but "Colossal Biosciences" is right out of the evil tech corporation name generator. I feel like I should be using a samurai sword to kill a bunch of mutated dudes in "Colossal Biosciences" lab coats after one of the experiments in their secret underground lair broke containment in some B-minus video game.
I think they made a movie about how bad bringing back an extinct species could turn out, maybe they should have watched it.

After this outfit brings back the Wooly Mammoth and the Sabre-Tooth Tiger, they're going to put them on an island with the Dire Wolves and open Colossal Park and charge admission. Hilarity is sure to ensue.
They should put them all on an island with really nice enriched environments and plenty of room to play and then sell tickets to visit the island. They could call it something like Jurassic Bark.
They've said they're not trying to recreate a Jurassic Park situation, but are trying to 'de-extinct' animals. My question is why didn't they start with something more recent and less dangerous, like maybe the passenger pigeon.

No E36 M3e. Or a dodo bird, or any number of thousands of critters that have gone by the wayside. But I guess that wouldn't be as cool as an uber-wolf
Yeah....
If you do some reading, they've messed with some genes from a real wolf to make it -look- like a direwolf.
They haven't actually brought the real thing back.

So its like a kit car?
Hey, that looks like a GT40!
Well, it looks like one...but its got Volkswagen guts.

To add on to this, the Grey Wolf, whose DNA they used as a base for the gene editing, is not even in the same genus as the Dire Wolf.
What they made are just transgenic grey wolves. They're not dire wolves in the same way a mouse with wooly mammoth DNA is also not a wooly mammoth.

But what if both these and the wooly mousemoths are REALLY cute? Does that count for anything?

Of course, and let the record show that I can't currently think of a good reason to oppose science using gene editing to make cute animals as long as the animals can live happy healthy lives.
I just oppose Colossal lying about their work to look more impressive, and I'm disappointed by the journalists who took their word for it.

Yes, but they'll inevitably become less 'cute' as they become adults. If you really want cute, develop (healthy, happy, and well-adjusted) forever-puppies, forever-kittens, and forever-wooly-mousemoth... pups?
Extinct animals are extinct for a reason. They are a failed species that could not compete with the world they lived in. 99% of the species that have lived on Earth are now extinct. They died to make room for newer species that could compete.
Why bring them back from the dead? What purpose does it serve? Maybe let the dead dogs lie.

It's basically a tribute band that bought some of the amps from the original band on Craigslist.
