Over the past 6 months, I've been delivering pizzas for the local Pizza Hut. I'm their hardest worker (the assistant managers have told me this), but my hours were cut to 8 hours last week. At the same time as cutting my hours, she gave the new guy 28 hours. The new guy had been there less than a week at that point.

Well, the night I found out that she had cut my hours, I hung around the restaurant while everyone was finishing up. The manager straight up asked my why I didn't just find something different. As fate would have it, in my inbox sat an email saying that I qualified for a position with a company that I had applied for months ago. Well, I applied, flubbed the interview and got put back in the pool. I looked over the other jobs I qualified for, applied for one, aced the interviews, and got a position. It's temp to perm, but I shouldn't have a problem moving to a permanent position.

Now, one of my friends has been working for Apple at home making $15 an hour. I'm thinking that once I get good at tech support again, I should make the move over there and start making the kind of money I should be making.

Anyway, for now, I'm moving from a part time job with shrinking hours to a full time job with set hours. My cars will be seeing some deferred maintenance caught up on, including an engine rebuild.

Hopefully, my good luck will continue into the future. Things have steadily gotten better since the wife moved out. Now I'm working on myself, not worrying about what she thinks about me.

Congrats on the new gig. I've changed jobs many times in my 50 years (and just did again this week!). I always keep eyes and ears open for new opportunities.

Your last sentence is significant. One of the many mistakes we married guys make is trying to please our spouse in ways we think they will appreciate while diminishing the things that please ourselves. Not to say that the opinion of our spouse doesn't matter but constantly changing in the hopes of pacifying them is a near-guaranteed road to destruction. Work on yourself, be the best man you can be and she'll either realize it and come back or she won't and you'll be in a perfect position to source the next Mrs Freese. Life is too short to be miserable.

This is where you're wrong. This isn't luck. This is a direct result of hard work and the desire to improve your lot in life. Keep this up and your life will continue to improve. You'll have setbacks, but the general trend will be up. Nice work

why would they drop you to 8 hrs and give the new guy 28 ? doesn't seem like a smart move for a business … and the manager telling you that you should really look for something else says to me that the hard work isn't appreciated

If hard work was appreciated, I would not have to work with some of the slackers I do.

Not to rain on your parade.. go celebrate, you deserve it!

Me too! I appreciate the irony of a perfectly straightforward, honest, forthright post, where a guy is talking about his life experience, but then the thread suddenly takes an abrupt turn south. Very entertaining.

My congrats to Derick on his recent good fortune. I sincerely hope it continues for you.

My thanks to Mr. Sperlo on vectoring the thread in a humorous direction. Well done.

I suppose there is a chance this thread could get back on track, but you can't beat good off-color humor.

We all get paid the same. There are no raises. What's funny is the new guy is really flaky. He's called in once and gone home early 3 times since he started. They've hired 5 drivers this month and lost 2.

I really wish I could go somewhere with direction, though. Even the high paying call center jobs aren't really career material. Those jobs come and go as the market changes.

I'm hearing that the construction industry is vett much back to life in FL. Can you get on with a skilled trade, work your way up?

Derick Freese

If I had 3 years of experience, I could be a laborer. That's the job market for construction workers here. They can get experienced people to pick up the garbage, so why bring on a new kid? The construction industry here is nothing like it used to be. It does pay pretty well, though. I guess if they are starting off their laborers at $12, they can expect experience.

Realistically, I don't think I could take the heat all day. I can handle it for short amounts of time, but if I work in the 95 degree weather, I get dizzy and faint. Probably not the best career choice. Even when I'm mowing on the weekends with my Dad, I get a break in the AC for a few minutes from lawn to lawn.

Well, I ended up going back to the pizza joint and getting my job back there. I couldn't handle the call center work. I guess I still can't handle it. The previous 2 times should have told me that.

It turns out that the new hires are all pretty poor workers, and they needed someone that could pick up slack. I'm not worried about hours right now, because something is better than nothing. It will give me some time to prepare one of my rooms for rent if nothing else.
