This is floating around the internet and I think it's pretty awesome IMO.
InitialD was set in the 90's and early 2000's, possibly as late as '98 or '99 for the first episodes. The manga was first serialized in 1995, and his age was set at that time at about 17.
So yeah, I guess he'd be in his 30's if we are using the manga release as the starting marker in the InitialD timeline.
I dig it.
Just wish they'd animate another "Stage". They never stopped making the manga; last thing I saw was leading up to him racing a race-prepped 350Z.
The Tokyo Pop translations were better than the Funimation ones. All initial D is good for now is a laugh at the expense of voice actors putting emphasis on typos.
i have no idea what the joke is, but then again the only japanese cartoons/comic books i know are Voltron and Robotech.

Yeah, a 20v that revs to 11,000 RPM (iirc) in a car that weighs a likely half ton less...
As long as he can still hook the inside wheel into the curbing, he'll win. At least, that's all it took in all the episodes I watched. Got to be a bit much.

The tofu car doesn't have a 20v. It's a Formula Atlantic motor, which to the best of my knowledge were all 16v. There is another similar engine (Group A?) that was 20v, though.

How far did you make it through? He does that once or twice in 1st stage, and then not again until I think once in 4th stage.
Then I guess I was watching a bad fansub, since that's what I remember.
IIRC, he only used the curb when he couldn't corner faster than the other car any other way. There was another race in which he floated a wheel over the curb somehow to pass. That was in the 4th stage. I want to say it was against either an S2000 or a Cappuccino.

IIRC, he did that when running against Kai's MR2 in the 3rd stage as well (although it required a bit more than that) and against one of the Emperor EVOs in the 2nd stage. It definitely seemed to be overdone to me too. Particularly since the translation I'd seen on the first stage had Nakazata say he this trick would only work on Mt. Akina as apparently the gutters were set up differently on the other mountains, and then he went and used this on several other roads.
I don't recall exactly how far I made it - through several DVDs on Netflix. Between the curb trick and the facial animation, I just gave up on it. Maybe I'll check in again. I much preferred ex-Driver.
