Friend of mine owns a two chair barbershop in town, three years ago he got a DUI.
I can understand not renewing his pistol permit, but he was just notified that they will not renew his license to cut hair or own a business. WTF?
Bear in mind that NYS runs a program where if you move your business here you don't pay taxes for ten years. Who makes up that difference?

Well, I'm not sure I'd want a drunk guy with a straight razor at my neck
Is he being straight with you? Was it maybe a felony?

That doesn't surprise me, we don't want just anyone cutting hair. For a while I was getting my hair cut at a barber college because it was cheap and close to work. If a driver's license was as much work as a barber's license in New York the roads would be empty.

Maybe he's the Barber of Seville?

Or worse, the Rabbit of Seville.

Ahh you're just scratching the surface of the silliness in NY. Not that there are other perfect states, but NY is a great state to be from, so long as I don't have to go back.

Exactly. I always found it funny how many more hours of training it takes to become a stylist vs a cop.

Some people leave for the winter, my wife would like to do that.
I want to make New Mexico or Texas my primary residence and visit NY in the summer.
It's a tough sell ....
Maybe it goes back to the 18th century when barbers were doing surgery.
I think there is more story here than you're getting.
I suspect you're connecting dots that are not related.

NY doesn't have a great summer, though. It's stupid hot there. It has a neat two weeks in the fall, and occasionally a nice spring, but only when you have that odd combination of lack of lingering snow and lack of massive rains.

The DUI probably shows he's of questionable moral character and not deemed worthy of a barber shop license. Sometimes when something affects your driver's license in NY it will also carry over to other business licenses. Like anything else that happens here it can usually be corrected by paying a lawyer.
My barber came from England and cut hair for years until a disgruntled business partner called the state of Illinois. So he went back to school, passed his test, and paid his fine. Same haircut.
I have male pattern baldness - so I told my barber I should get my haircut for half price since I have half the hair of most men and he said he is going to charge me double since he said it took him twice as long to find it.

Maybe. Though I see nothing of that in the licencing requirements for barbering. I also don't see anything presented by the OP stating that the letter from the state indicates the reason for refusing to renew the barbering licence is the DUI infraction. There are other far more likely reasons, like failing to get the necessary physical, etc.
I looked at the barber license renewal on line, there's a blurb in there about being more than four months in arrears for child support. Five kids, two wives, lives in the back of the shop; maybe he skipped that line.
Sounds like a government decision. "This guy is just scraping by, and is behind on his bills. Lets drive him out of business."
Never trust a bald barber. He doesn't give two E36 M3s about your hair.

While Subways are very popular they are not the only thing a deranged homeless person could push you in front of here.
new york's alright if you like tuberculosis
What ?
Often when people talk of NY they are speaking of the City.
There is a whole upstate that is not a bad place to live.
The recent jail break showed how wild some parts are.
After being in some of the "warm" states, I prefer upstate NY and I have fun in the winter.
Yes, our gov't leaves much to be desired.
