For the past couple of weeks or so I've been getting huge lag spikes while gaming online (mostly World of Tanks). I know just enough about computers to be dangerous and already replace the modem with no change in lag issues. I've attached some images of pingplotter (to the IP of the game server) if someone can interpret them for me and let me know what's going on with my packet loss and lag.

I'm shuffling around routers tonight to see if that changes where my packet loss comes in.

Beats me man. I got kicked out of five battles yesterday. It always reconnect back in the room but it's freaking annoying. At least the computer acts better than the PS3 does. I can't even watch Netflix on that and forget about gaming.

Use command line tool tracert [IP or domain]

traceroute on a real system

Output will give you times and % of packet loss for each hop of the trip

Have you made sure there are no issues with the cables coming into the house. I've had issues before with things chewing on them and the garbage trucks in the back alley destroying them. Both because the cable company did a E36 M3ty job burying it. Cable tv was not affected but internet was infuriating.

I ran pingplotter and thought I posted it in my first post. I ran tracert a bunch of times, but since it's intermittent it didn't show me anything since it wasn't acting up at that exact time. Let's try attaching those pics again.

I can't remeber how to embed, so here's a link

I had to open the ports on my router to fix a problem like this years ago. Still get lag every once and awhile, but not often.

Edit: Also, WoT servers have been tossing lag spikes the last couple of weeks. They've been loading a massive update(that hits today) onto their servers.

From that graph it looks like you have an intermittent problem with your Internet connection, which is causing heavy packet loss across the board. I'd look into that first. Maybe you could hop on a neighbor's wireless and run a test at the same time on that to confirm.

Edit: Just so you know, using others' unsecured wireless is illegal in certain places that have dumb laws.

I found a noticeable improvement switching my main netflix/browsing/etc. box from wifi to ethernet.

In reply to scardeal:

Thats because a wired connection is faster than a wifi connection.

Wired is also more reliable, which is probably what would cause any apparent difference in speed to anything outside of your LAN.
