It is very bad for my wallet. We went out to the local yard today since it was not raining to see if we could find a turn signal lens for my girl friends new '96 Tacoma and sadly did not find a single Tacoma in the place. I decided to walk through the GM side on the way back to the front of the yard and what do I spy? An absolutely complete and in relatively good condition '77 Hurst Olds Delta 88 Pace Car . I mean this thing is in good enough shape that if I didn't already have 2 project Olds I would drag it home to restore. Heck the interior was cleaner than my '95 Ram.
I gave it a quick walk around and it had all 4 of the gold ralley wheels in good shape (that are now being pulled for me to pick up tomorrow). I asked up front it still has the 403 in it though they are not sure if it runs but are going to run a comp check on it hopefully before I get out there tomorrow...
Looks just like this one though missing the decals and had gold wheels instead of red
wow i've owned and driven much uglier cars than that
Super Cool. Wish it was nearer.
I am not really a GM guy.. but I would rock that
I really am tempted to ask how much they want for the whole thing...my girl would kill me though

What's more important...the car or the girl? :D
Well she was trying to figure out an anniversary present for me lol...
I will more than likely settle for the wheels and engine

Trick Question. The answer is always 442 or 2 or 288 or ...................... girl w/442 .That ............See, I are duz math
Well the car will basically already qualify for the 442 with the parts I have I have multiple 4 barrels laying around, a 4 speed trans and a dual exhaust is a must for me on this car already. Granted I also have a full Corvette TPI system and a reprogrammed prom to manage things sitting on my shelf next to a 355 with high flow heads waiting on a rebuild for oh a year or two now lol. Oh there is also a 12 bolt rear out of a GTO sitting on a couple of old kitchen chairs out in the shop as well and a full set of racing springs that were in the trunk of one of the cars when I hauled it home.
I also have a Olds 350 and a Pontiac 301 sitting in cars waiting to be pulled. I honestly am going to be working on the car this summer I swear. I have parts I just need to get busy and build. The Chevy engine would be killer but it needs a dip and full rebuild including the heads so a bit spendy at the moment and I'm kinda digging the idea of keeping the Olds well Olds these days then drop the Chevy in a 70's Camaro I have had my eye on.
Dude, if whole car is remotely an option, I vote to rescue it.
Funny thing is I just told my mom about the car and she suggested offering them a swap one of my Cutlasses for the Pace Car.
It is begging for a big 3 on the side.

Weird, my calculator says 442, but google says girl.
Well guys I just got back from the yard picking up the wheels and sadly they have already sent in the paperwork for the car to be destroyed. He said he would have worked a deal with me if I had gotten there last week before the paperwork was done.
However I then asked him if he knew if the engine ran and yep it runs, in fact the car was DRIVEN in with no problems the person was just tired of crappy mileage compared to newer cars . He said he would let the complete engine with all accessories top to bottom go for $550 and he would throw in the bracing bars on top and the special edition steering wheel. I told my girl friend and she asked if I wanted it for my anniversary present, in two weeks we will have been together for 2 years . So I guess the math adds up to 442 + girl = win.
Here are the photos of the car if you guys yourselves or anyone you know is interested in parts from this car PLEASE let me know. It is slated to go to the crusher but he will hold off as long as I can keep people wanting parts from it.
The guys who run the yard are idiots. Worth way more in selling to a collector than they'll ever get for scrap--even with the marketing costs. Unless they HAVE to get rid of this car due to some state law/ordinance about the time a car can stay on the premises....
"...sent in the pape rwork for the car to be destroyed." Doesn't that normally happen AFTER a car is crushed/destroyed, or are these guys "proactive"? This one does not add up, it smells as if something's going on with a buyer. Just very odd.
OR, it's a clone and not the real thing. Or, as here, without a clear title, car can not be sold. Overthinking this one.......
My local has a 53 Cadillac, 50's Plymouth, 2 Corvairs and a 70's 442
Some states (Wisconsin is one of them) dictate that once a vehicle title is "Junked" the car cant be reregistered in that state. Most junk yards have to do this ASAP, as they do not have a license to sell whole cars.
Of course, some yards don't care if you know them and get it out of there ASAP, but they can get it hot water doing this.
No idea how it would work to reregister a car with a junked title through one of the title bonding companies or from a state that doesnt require a title past a certain age and bring it back to Wisconsin.

If you really really want it, I see no moral issue with buying a junker cutlass, swapping the VIN tags with that one, and shaking the guys hand with some cash in your palm to swap the two cars. They make their legal stuff happy, they get their scrap money and you save a now undocumentable cool car.
Of course, this is if you really want it. In SC I could get away with anything - not sure where you are or how much you want to risk. If nobody sees you swapping tags, you can't ever really get caught, and who would really care?
I don't know what the procedures are but I have asked several times at junkyards if I could buy a certain car and the answer is always no. Once they go in they don't come back.
Some states have tight greenie laws that say once the vehicle is sold to a salvager it is no longer a vehicle but rather scrap metal. The auto parts can be sold from the "scrapped" vehicle but the whole can not be sold.
