Having just turned a year old last week, and already in possession of more vehicles than me, my daughter is growing up into cars fairly well so far. But I'm also at the point from listening to the "noisy Farm" book that I hear it in my sleep when she isn't even here. This has got me thinking about a fun and exciting way to help get kids into cars a little better, and maybe teach us adults as well.

Instead of "the cheeseburger goes moo, the bacon goes oink, etc." I want to make a noisy kids book with car sounds.

I'm thinking a boxer, a rotary, a lumpy v8, maybe a strung out F1 car and a big diesel truck. Basically I want to cover the basics, without getting too strange (A dual charged v6 is too strange, for reference)

So far I think my teaching her is working, when she hears my friend coming with her STI, and I say "boxer" she gets all excited, and I've been told she recognizes my car coming back home as well, though I haven't personally seen that one. But a book with the different noises would be fun for me as a dad to have to hear all the time, and maybe help teach her some basics.

Am I just stupid and living in a fantasy car world, or does this sound like something that could work? I'm willing to bet just going around the forum we could get all the noises recorded, I just don't know anyone in the industry to pitch to.

But if this already exists, PLEASE send me an Amazon link, and I'll buy one for your kid too.

It looks like the focus has been on trucks and heavy equipment. I like the idea of one for automotive enthusiasts. I need to make a call.

Love the idea. But, I wouldn't concentrate on too many engine sounds. A few very distinct ones, absolutely. Then add things like a horn, an air gun, maybe a burnout, etc.

I'm thinking the basic engine noises, so like 5 or 6, but I like the air gun and horn, and burnout idea. Our Noisy Farm book has 6 animals and an all noises button at the end. 6 to 8 noises would be great, and still small enough to fit on a small memory chip.

I like this idea as well... I would be curious about the best way to get consistent/ quality audio samples, if you sourced from the forum. (Also intersted for one of my own crazy projects)

I remember growing up I could always tell when dad was turning on the gravel road... 77 Camaro with a modded in-line 6, only thing that sounded like that.

Wife says she likes my Vette for the same reason

I've actually been thinking about getting the audio for a while. I kind of thought I could rig an inline microphone to my home theater and rip the sounds from Forza or Dirt, where they professionally recorded it to begin with. Or just wander around a car show with a good recorder.

To make it easy start with a top fuel dragster and the rest of the book they'll just hear generic ringing.

Funny, I was thinking about that at lunch. An electric car "sound" in there would be neat and funny for a kid all at the same time.

Man, now you've got my brain spinning on different stories for the cars, how to tie them together, etc. I've had a similar idea for a number of years on a children's story series based on a specific car model. I could probably even get a tie in from the manufacturer if it was good enough. I just never really pursued it. Plus, it would require artwork skills that I just don't have.

OK, now I'm really starting to think about this. You could publish it electronically (it's what all the cool kids do these days), which would make sound quality not only better, but much easier to overcome. Start selling on Amazon or iBooks and see if it takes off.

(Now I'm really re-thinking writing my series)

And to think I almost gave up writing when "The kid who died from eating all his vegetables" and "Nobody poops but you" didn't get picked up.

I've debated the electronic market in the past, but I'm honestly against giving kids devices. I know a lot of people are doing it these days, but let the kid be a kid, and get off my lawn!

Hmm... The book of electric car sounds... Wouldn't even need a microchip or speaker, that'd be a great entry. Might have to do a series.. JDM, Euro-lux, American Muscle, BMW-digital or whoever else is pumping fake engine noises into the cabins... Special editions for my personal favorite, anti lag systems of the WRC and older F1. Ferarri had a ridiculous formula motor, like 1.8 liter v12? I think i remember it being, don't remember specifics, but it's noise was fantastic.

You guys are terrible for my limited free time, and I know this was my idea to begin with, but I keep finding more and more projects to get halfway through the more time I spend here.

Totally understood and agree. However, it's an easy way to see if it's popular enough to get a publisher to pick it up with a much lower cost entry point. Printing books, especially ones with sounds, will get expensive quickly. You could do the first one electronically, build up some funds and interest, and then publish a hard bound version once it takes off.

Electronics are cool and I 100% think that kids should be exposed as soon as possible because it'll be a part of their lives, but there is something much more magical and interactive with a book.

Just trying to offer an easier (read less financial risk) way to start your dream.

Here, you can have this idea as your own because I'm never really going to do anything with it.

In reply to rob_lewis:

Oh, it's a great idea, and if I follow through with it I will probably do that. I didn't mean to sound as dickish as it came out, I just don't like all these people handing their toddlers phones and tablets as babysitters. Totally different topic, just overflow.
