Collapsible steering columns came out in 1966?

I'm going to go ahead and gloss over the fact that this dude had a 7" chunk of metal in his arm for FIFTY YEARS without knowing it and point out how much safer modern cars are than that T-bird.

I'm pretty sure about 75% of those viewing this were about to post the same.

Also, I just realized I was born at that hospital. Completely irrelevant...

T-birds had swinging columns to make it easier to get in and out.

Collapsible columns were 1968, along with safety glass and dual braking circuits.

I'm impressed by how much damage the 'Bird caused to the truck!

I believe they were mandated (among many other things) for the 68 MY, but a lot was phased in earlier on a lot of cars.

The collapsible column wasn't so much that it would collapse when the driver hit it so much as it would collapse when something ramming the front of the car tried to shove the steering box back.

You'll find that plenty of cars were completely redesigned for '68, probably so the known changes didn't require retooling existing designs. T-birds were one of those chassis.

A shame it's one of my favorite years too. Had to pass on a 64 2dr in Dallas that was a second owner by virtue of death with 16,000 original miles and original black on black. The Berkeleying thing was 10" long than my garage was deep!

That's not quite accurate--the 68 T-Bird was the same as the 67-71. I may not know Miatas or E30s, but I know T-Birds.

Incidentally, I had a 62. Fortunately, I sold it instead of wrecked it.

Especially since his right eye would start blinking every time he lifted his arm.

Huh, for some reason I thought the weird unibody cars were '68-71.
