SC Sucks, You don't want to move here any more than we want you to.

Depends on exactly how old you are, but yeah if you're retiring, you should be safe. Be sure to look into a reverse mortgage on the house

Pretty sure that's why I'm still here.
3 years of living in Louisiana cured me of wanting to live in the south. Visit, oh yes, but not to live.
One thing I realized when I moved here was the term Yankee is still used. I thought "I hate the Yankees--- I was born in Boston" yeah not the same thing......for some the Civil War is still going on.....I'm sorry the "War of Northern Aggression".
Also, that Abe Lincoln fellow evidentially was a lying liar... and a liar too. One stop at Maurice's BBQ in SC learned me that. They have a very interesting "book store" in the restaurant that is sure to offend anyone born North of the Mason-Dixon line. Or anyone of color for that matter....
Besides, Florida isn't the South--- it's a tropical New Jersey! (well, at least Boca)
And we aren't worried about the oceans rising.....at all. Most of us have boats down here.
In reply to Joe Gearin:
I have heard that stuff over and over but I have never seen it. I have encountered exactly one racist dude (my truck's PO) down here. In NY I saw more, and definitely more in the opposite direction.
Yankee is thrown around as a kidding-around kind of thing, but it's not a big deal to anyone.

That's why we call'em halfbacks
To Joe Gearin
For God's sake don't judge all South Carolinians by Maurice Bessinger.
And his BBQ sucks.
After I lived in Tampa for 4 years, the phrase "the more north you go, the more southern it gets" made sense.
I do kinda miss it though. Idaho has its virtues but wearing shorts in January is not one of them .
When my folks retired from Iowa to the middle of nowhere (40 minutes each way to get milk) in New Mexico, they found the area tended to also attract folks from New Jersey. I dunno, Witness Relocation Program or something...
In reply to Joe Gearin:
If your local area uses the term "Yankee" without also using the term "Damned Yankee", then you are not living in the South, regardless of your geographic location.
In reply to tuna55:
"Yankee" is NOT a casual term where I live.
It evokes deeper resentment then "n#gg#r"..
Easy guys---- I didn't mean to infer that all Southerners were racist--- sorry it came off that way. After living in Boston and Chicagoland I'd actually say there is more blatant racism up there, than I've run across down here. Not to say it isn't common down here---- unfortunately it is.
The Maurice's BBQ thing was just a massive culture shock---as there is no way that sort of "book store" would be tolerated up North. Either the law would put a stop to it.....or that place would be burnt to the ground. And I agree, the BBQ isn't that great. About the only reason to go there is to be shocked.....once is enough.
And yes, the Yankee slur is mostly in jest......but there is a lingering distaste for Northerners in these parts.....especially in the more rural parts of FL. Probably for justified reasons---- kind of like how those overseas see Americans as fat, loud and obnoxious. We all aren't, but enough of us have been to create a stereotype that lingers.
In any case, this "Yankee" likes living in Florida. Every place is what you make of it, and there's a lot to like down here----including the fact that I can buy a nice home within 200 yards of the beach for under $150K.
I could move down there tomorrow. If i could find a way to unload my house and get work there i would.
The only thing I ever get when I go down south are questions about where I'm from. People seem to think I talk funny. One time I was in North Carolina at some diner in the middle of nowhere and one of the waitresses asked if I ever killed anyone bein' from New York and all. Not today but its still early.
When I watch Diners Drive-ins & Dives and Anthony Bourdain, I could live wherever they are now.
I have yet to meet a food I don't like ......
When I am in the south and some asks where I am from, I Say Upstate New York State.
I have been in various parts of the south and I never got a "yankee" reaction. People were nice.
In reply to iceracer:
We only call them Yankees when they come down here and try to tell us what we are doing wrong.
I'm not a big fan of snow- haven't been for many years.
Don't like super cold, as it hurts when the wind chill is below 0.
So I can't say that I'm a big fan of winter.
However- every time I'm someplace really warm, the issues are worse- spent a week in Puerto Rico twice in the last month. It was mid to high 80s every day. My body does not like it that hot- when I go running in that heat- I'm pretty miserable. When it's cold, at least I can put more stuff on.
All in all, I can tolerate the cold winters over the hot summers by quite a margin.
Besides, Michigan is a great state.
Moved to SW Florida 6 months ago and didn't know anyone, joined a car club and have made some of the best friends I have ever had. We have room for more. And 75 deg here today

I too am a moderate temperature fellow. I skied today and it was -17F. I paid good money for what was essentially enduring torture.
I am happiest in short pants at 50F. I sweat like it's a superpower standing still in the humid northeast 85F.
There is a reason northern California is full - so I'm looking for another one of those that none of you twatwaffles have heard of yet.
You'll need to log in to post.
