No really, if I wasn't married with kids I would be in the planning stages right now and I don't even like motorcycles.

I give you, The Mobius Trip. It's worth every second.

How is it I have never heard of the the Trans-American Trail? I wonder how much of it I could cover in the Samurai.

I'm 62 pages into the ride report, what a great read with awesome photos.

Want company? Wait until it warms up a little and I'll fake my own death, pay cash for an R1150GSA... eat lizards on a stick near a hobo fire somewhere along a dirt road.

Yeah, and just a heads-up to all you early 20-somethings who are footloose and fancy free. Drop whatever the hell it is you are doing and go on an adventure! Read Jack Kerouac's On The Road, Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, or Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild. Go on an epic journey and live to write about it! Don't wait until you're a veritable Al Bundy, married with children and selling shoes to fat women.

As someone who formally rode motorcycle and had a dual sport, I'd more interested in doing this type of adventure with a high-mpg SUV or even a car.

It'd be fun to turn a Prius C or any other 40mpg hatchback into a mini expedition vehicle. Lift, rack, rear seating area removed for spare fuel and water tank. You'd still have to sleep outside, but at least you'd have more protection than a motorcycle.

Screw that. Don't waste time reading or watching reruns. Pack your E36 M3 and leave before lunchtime.

And with that statement we all know you are not a 20 something ;)

I'll wholeheartedly agree on the sentiment though - except doing a lot of cool things when you are young in no way makes them less attractive when you get older. You really can't get Bob Costas, racing, or really any outdoor adventure out of your system. Good memories only sharpen your appetite when you are 45.

Yeah, but insulating oneself from the environment would take the edge off.

I stay off of ADVRider.com because I just know I'll sell everything and head out.

Thank you for awakening demons that I thought had been put to rest... In seriousness, I get out of the Army in about a year and am planning a Mexico-to-Canada backroad motorcycle ride in celebration -- either solo, or with my dad. I am married and I have two kids, but they are used to me being gone a year at a time to sandy places where people shoot at me, so a few months in the mountains won't put them out too much. this just makes me even more giddy.

Quoted for truth.....for whatever reason, I don't think heller ever caught on to the whole motorcycle thing if he thinks a prius c would be more fun to take on a trek like this.

This is something that I have recently find an interest in. If you want to do something like this on a GS though, watch "Long way round" with Ewan McGregor. GS is the WRONG BIKE. Too heavy for anything past simple gravel roads. You want to stay in the "Dirt bike that can keep up on the highway" category. EG: KLR, DRZ, Enduros (just got a sweet Husky), Etc... Anything much over 400 lbs is going to be terrible offroad. The smaller Beemers are probably fine but I would consider a KTM 690 first and MAYBE a 990 Adventure, even though that is still too big IMO.

I too have to proactively avoid the site. I have read some great stuff there. One Christmas break I read (live) about a guy who was going from Boston to Colorado, by bike to meet his girlfriends parents.
Also a good (also live) story about an 18yr old leaving desert California to see NYC; by 35 mph scooter!
The ADV writing style is very interesting to me with good pictures, description of places/people and food.

If you have days to kill, rear the reports by Vermin.

If you want the visual version, go watch Long Way Round and then Long Way Down on Netflix. I've never even been on a motorcycle and it made me want to sell everything I own and do it.

Curmudeon- You can get wicked deals on Huskys right now. I just got a 2011 Husky TXC 449 for what I feel is a steal and while it is more bike than I can handle, I will grow into it and the thing is wicked.

If you're going to buy an off road Husky, you'd be far better off with a WR300 than any of the TXC's.
