I should have saved my money and bought a sports car..........all kidding aside once in a while I crack out my old R&T’s (April, 1971) and scour the car ads.  What was my dad thinking?

I have an R&T from the same era.  The ads are heartbreaking.

$6700 in 1971 was $43k today.  Not quite pocket change but seeing as a 275 gtb is almost $2M now....

Our longtime family pal Jake sold his gullwing at about that same time, maybe a couple years earlier, and at about that price...

Hell, at the turn of the century, I was 20. I had a chance to buy a rust free 70 Charger (in boxes) for $1,000. I will never, ever see that again.

Hawaii is a lot closer to Japan than any other part of the US.

That's just East Russia up there. Probably more Yugos and Ladas than Toyotas.

I wonder if i made vroom vroom noises in that 275 GTB when I was little?   I was born in 1966 and grew up in Takoma Park MD.  According to Google Maps, it is 3.2 miles from my childhood home to the address in that ad.   My dad's good friend Jack Belgard owned one of the first imported car garages in the area, Belgard Engineering at 811 Burlington Av in Silver Spring, about 3.4 miles from the address in that ad.  Jack had a reputation as being the go-to guy in the area for European car service/maintenance.   I can remember E-types, Gullwing and ragtop 300SLs, Rollses, as well as all the VW Porsche Triumph Austin MG etc stuff that you'd expect.   i pretty much grew up in Belgard's shop, because my dad would pick me up from school and stop in to hang out, use the parts washer, or the brake lathe, or the bearing press, or to drop off a special tool he had made for Jack (dad was a tool and die maker and had a small machine shop in our basement).

also interesting to note, ever since i was little, I only remember Chillum as a place to get stabbed.  this is not a baller neighborhood at all, just a bunch of small single-family homes and duplexes.  it's more baller than the street i grew up on, since every house has a driveway, but there are no garages.   here's a current satellite view:

also, it looks like that car is still alive somewhere (as of 2003 anyway) (i googled "Ferrari GTB 6639"):

I have a friend that had a friend who owned a Shelby 427 Cobra back in the late 70's. The owner grew tired of the poor mileage and offered to sell it to my friend for about $6K. My friend was driving a Pinto at the time so needless to say he didn't have the cash or room to buy and keep the car.

Built a 3 br raised ranch for a couple in the late 70's. Move in day a 50's gullwing 300 SL Mercedes showed up and was stuck in one side of the garage. Just the guys old car from youth he hung onto.

It was just a joke to roll with the fact hat I mis-spoke and was (rightly) called out for it.

I have actually been to Alaska. Spent a couple of weeks around Anchorage visiting family. Had a great time and would go again. But that's probably pretty different from the Aluetian Islands that you referenced, which are several hundred miles further West and far more wild.
