I need some new ones for work travel - mainly airplane. I'd like an in-ear option, but something that holds better than crappy ear buds. Needs to have a microphone for conference calls too.

Something like this, but preferably for less than $299 (before tax).

Pricy but those work really well. I tried them a couple weeks back and was just amazed at the difference.

A good pair of in ear headphones will block out a good bit of sound without the need for active noise cancelling. Try something like these Etymotic headphones. Way less expensive than the Bose, and probably sound better too. Similar models are also available from Shure and Ultimate Ears.

I would certainly consider headphones without active noise cancellation. Have you used those Etymotics before? I'm always a little concerned that earbuds aren't going to stay put. I won't be using them for exercise, but do want them to be snug.

i saw some goop on one of those stupid "lifehack" clickbait pages that is a rubber like silicone substance that dries to a soft silicone, and one of the uses was to hold earbuds in place and make them cancel sound better. it is called Sugru..

I have Sol Republic, they cancel-out baby and wife noises very well.

I haven't used those Etymotics before, but they appear to come really highly recommended. I have tended to use over-ear headphones in the past, as the in-ear variety get uncomfortable for me after a while. The downside is that they are super bulky for travelling.
