I wish I had good news. It's shocking the vile filth that seems to amuse some people.

GameboyRMH helped us gather some useful information to point things in the right direction, but law enforcement and the courts have been pathetic and completely inept, and threats have continued and worsened.

PIs have turned us down.

We are now pushing on the FBI to pursue the cyber crimes.

So, how was YOUR day, honey?

Assuming it's only one person (which we can't prove), getting the person fired without followthrough by law enforcement, or medical treatment would not stop the threats, only increase them.

This is a very sick person.

We can't actually prove any person. We can only link SOME of the threats to an IP address. Investigation beyond that is the job of law enforcement , and they aren't helping.

Attorney General, FBI, GBI.

Escalate hard and fast. Keep going up until you get satisfaction. Appeal to the governor. If you can get some sniffles out of the governor, he might pressure the police to make it a big deal. Its a PR gold mine for Nathan Deal. Dem who switched to the GOP, won by a tiny margin, his recovery services controversy... he'll bite.

Its time to kill the fly with a blowtorch. No more chopsticks. Go big.

Let us know if there is anything we can do. I, personally don't have much knowledge about cyber threats or legal stuff, but I have your back. Even if you want to fly her up to PA for a little protective custody, I have a fantastic family and fast wi-fi. She can keep blogging AND make snowmen in the back yard.

Keep pushing for help mate, don't take no for an answer.

In the mean time, try and keep your asses covered from a legal stand point and do your best not to let on to anyone suspected that they are such. I said it earlier in the thread and I'll say it again, make sure your daughter has some form of personal protective at all times and definitely try and ensure she has a personal distress device of some kind, be it a phone app or emergency beacon of some description.

Well, this has been a real lesson in how berkeleyed up our system is.

It's such a tremendously long story that I really can't repeat the details. But the summary is:

  • It appears that the sole perp is the family member we suspected.

  • She was arrested this week, and let out on $50K bond.

  • My daughter amassed a mountain of evidence on her own- APD was not much help at all.

  • At some point, the case was turned over to Homeland Security Department of Cyber Crimes. The investigation got a little better then, but not much.

  • They confiscated her phone on arrest, but not her computer. Pretty sure she has wiped it now that she's been released.

  • They did not get a warrant to search her computer, work computer, Google accounts, FaceBook accounts, service provider, office, home, or the company server.

  • The bar is REALLY high for proving cyber crimes. Bottom line- you can trace back a crime to an IP address, but you can't prove who was sitting at the computer typing.

  • My take is that victims have little to no rights. Rights are for the criminals.

  • I am concerned that the investigator is not trying to solve the case, but trying to get us off his back.

Court appearance is in 2 weeks. The bigger problem is that my daughter will have to live with this person in the family basically forever.

Really glad to hear of the arrest, even if the process is falling a little short on the follow through. I suspect Cruella's circle of family & friends won't assume that she's still so innocent at this point. One can only hope so anyway.

I hope everything goes well in court, and that it shines a spotlight on the issues this individual truly has so she can get help.

Hopefully your daughter has people who can be with her over the next two weeks for an added layer of security though, just to be on the safe side. My thoughts are with you guys

Unfortunately, I really doubt Cruella's friends and family will accept that she has any blame. Cruella is an African American woman, and everything about this relationship has had an undertone of racial divide (even though my daughter is also a minority). To Cruella and her friends and family, it will just be more evidence of racism and how unfair the world is to them, and why they have a right to be angry.

I really wish I could make this go away....

Judge offered her a deal which would wipe her record clean if she entered anger management classes. She turned it down.

2 weeks later, threats are building up again, in spite of being under a restraining order. Her latest ploy is pretty bad- she posted a CL ad looking for a sexual tryst and included my daughter's phone number and home address. Now my daughter is getting calls from creepy ATL CL guys. Looks like she's too chicken to actually do her own real life dirty work, so she's using unknown sex addicts to do it for her.

Authorities don't seem to be able to do a thing.

Damn, she's a crazy bitch...I'm glad she didn't take the deal though. She'd get her record wiped clean and I don't think the anger management classes would help one bit.

Try posting a CL ad with a $1000 reward for the person who brings you her scalp. Use a burner phone. Pay with unmarked bills ;)

IMHO, anyone that sides with Cruella should be cut off; no contact. I don't care if you're family, you earn the right to associate with someone, and you can lose it too. But I know how hard that can be, having my own family drama.

Thanks for the links, but I don't think they help.

The core legal problem is that it is easy to prove URLs or emails, but VERY difficult to prove who was sitting at the computer. Thats not good enough in court.

And Cruella is posting primarily from a work computer, which makes it impossible to prove who was sitting there.

I don't understand her employers not wanting to get involved in helping prove that it was her. I can assure you that if her employer has an in-house IT Department they absolutely will be able to prove that it was her sitting behind the keyboard at the time those threats were sent from their own computers.

The question now becomes; since the purp has been positively identified, how far are you willing to go to ensure that the perp absolutely loses all taste for continuing this game? (read into that what you will)

I truly feel sorry for you. My daughter studied this topic for her criminal justice class and it seemed to come down to:

  • Methods to prevent cyber crime are extremely invasive into privacy of anyone on the net.
  • Methods to catch criminals after the fact either require extremely invasive internet warrants and/or extremely aggressive physical seizure of anything connected to the person of interest including tech of family, friends, work, local library, etc.

Both aren't what the majority of Americans want (see the whole phone meta data collection "scandal"). It sounds more like a family problem than an internet one. The technology are just tools to try and focus attention on the family member initiating the negative vibes. But in the end I think you should spend time focusing on gathering knowledge of how to get the family resolution completed. More consultation of therapists to help those on your Daughter's side of things effectively move the other family members towards refocusing Cruella to other things. Most people aren't mentally unstable, so Cruella can't be happy spending all that time trying to hurt your daughter. Maybe she needs a platform or another way to communicate her griefs and have them resolved even if it is coming to terms to agree to disagree. Sometimes just avoiding a touchy topic is enough to repair family breaks. Just agree to never discuss it. Talk about the kids summer camp or Avengers movie x or only about food.

I'm pretty willing. My daughter is not.

The problem is that Cruella is extremely intelligent, and seemingly has no limit as to how far she is willing to go with this, or how much time she has to put into it. It's stalking, by a person with a disturbed mind. My daughter is pretty confident she will not win at the game of online one-upmanship.

She's probably right.

I find this odd as every workplace I have been in requires secure logins now. Even if to just track usage of software by x versus y group. Heck even the local diner lists the waitresses name on the receipt for tracking. I would think the company would see the holes in their internet security if someone can use them from inside their building to send data out without any tracking to the employee sending out the stuff.
