I am not very knowledgeable about how the internets work and I have a problem that I could use some advice on.

The last two weeks I've been getting kicked off randomly. It's especially troublesome on Wednesday nights when I'm trying to race with all the boys in the unofficial GRM GT6 racing series. We are getting ready to kick off a new season and I need reliable internets as this is the most important thing going on in my life right now.

Anyway it happened yesterday while I was in my phone and I ran the diagnostic tests from at&t that popped up on my phone. Everything passed the test except for the Ethernet port. It said something about the Ethernet port not setting up layers? I have no idea what that means or how to fix it.

Halp! I have to fix this before Wednesday.

Have you tried turning it off and back on again?

No, seriously. First step is to unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds and plug them back in.

Another issue that I get from time to time is when the Time Warner folks are working at a nearby hub, we get a lot of signal interruption as they are messing around with things. If I see a time warner van anywhere on my street I can bet I won't have reliable internets that day.

I don't know about the layers. Hopefully someone who actually knows something will pop in and help.

If you can get the exact error message I might be able to help...and what exactly do you mean by "kicked off?" That you can't get a wireless connection, can't reach websites, or that your link drops out indicated by a light on the modem?

I have a wireless connection. I can not get to websites. It happens randomly.

When I'm on the PS3 signed into the playstation network and logged into their servers while playing online it will kick me out of the room. When I try to get back into the room in the game it says I'm not signed into the playstation network even though it shows me still signed in on the PS3. The only way to get back in is to shut it down and restart it.

On the phone I will try to get to the GRM website and that's when the little AT&T box pops up telling me I have a problem. It corrects itself after about thirty seconds or so and I can get to the website. It has done it several times over the past couple weeks. Last night was the first time I hit the little diagnose button, mainly out of curiosity.

I haven't had it happen while on my computer yet. I haven't looked at the modem while it's happening either, as I said it usually corrects itself after a little while. I just don't want it to happen while I'm in the middle of a battle with one lap to go in a race. If it happens again I'll try to get more accurate info.

What do you mean by "wireless" connection? Does the router hook into the wall socket and provide you with a wifi connection, or is the delivery of Th3 Internetz completely wireless via an uncabled access point?

I've had the same issues in the past. And yes, unplugging and plugging the wifi router was the solution.

Thank you. That may well be the first thing I've read today that actually made sense!

This is what I'm getting.

WARNING: DSL Failed to Connect (Message ID: NAD-3305)

That translates into "go yell at AT&T", as it looks like the router is losing upstream sync and then can't reconnect. Could be bad wiring in your house, wet contacts outside (had that in the UK) or a mouse chewing on the cable.

They just replaced the wiring outside a couple weeks ago. Didn't work at all prior to that. I googled it and it seems like a very common problem with no real solutions that I have found yet. We had uverse in Knoxville and never had an issue.

Yeah, I just googled the error as well, doesn't look like there is a single useful resolution for it. Do you know/did they tell you how far away you are from the exchange? They might be pushing DSL to it limits or they have a bad-ish wire somewhere between you and the exchange.

How many devices do you have connected to the phone line? Does the connection stay up longer if you disconnect everything but the filter and modem?

Neighbour of mine in the UK had a problem similar to yours, it took the phone company close to three months to find that the wire on the pole had damaged insulation. Well, they did spend the first two months blaming his house wiring and he couldn't convince them that the house wiring was in A1 shape. After all, he's only a licensed electrician...

Why was the wiring replaced? May be time for new interneting hardware.

Other than that I'd go with ECMs suggestion

Honestly, this is kind of why I ended up paying the extra for cable internet. I'd work from home at least one day a week, and the DSL (Verizon in my case) varied from acceptable to molasses slow. Lowest tier cable from Comcast has been blazing fast and rock-solid since I've had it.

Funny story. I have bundled TV/Internet/Voice from a big company whose name starts with a "C" and is synonymous with the absolute bottom of the heap in customer service. The modem/phone adapter provided by them goes funny. TV works, internet works. Only the phone does not work. I unplug and power up. Twice. Then I call. They ask me to check connections. All are tight. They try addressing the device from their location. It does not respond as it should. They schedule a tech visit.

Naturally, I go onto the internet and research options for VOIP. I can buy my own adapter, use my own phones, and port my current number. Miraculously, a short time later, my phone starts working! Coincidence? I think not.
