So is it just me, or does it seem that those discussing the possibility that we "aren't alone" seems to be drifting from crazy haired "It Simply Must Be Aliens" guy on History Channel to a bit more mainstream commentary? This also seems to be creeping it's way into the "open to the public" portions of government. Possibly, it's just the news sources I'm following, but a quick google search says it's begin reported throughout the "political spectrum of the news" (it's sad that there even is/seems to be such a thing, but that's a whole other topic)
You all tend to be smart, well informed and willing to "think outside of the box", so I'm curious as to the collective take on it.
I'll start the ball rolling with my official $0.02 ($0.016 Canadian). I suspect it's actually advanced military technology. In the 50's and 60's, "it's aliens" was sort of the official/unofficial cover story for some of the advanced projects being experimented with by the military. Way back in the 1990's, I was talking with a friend who's spouse was working on the "Aurora Project" (for Lockheed IIRC) in their accounting department. He indicated they were receiving MASSIVE amounts of dark money and that the "worst kept secret in the company" was that they were working on extremely advanced propulsion technology. That was 25 years ago . . . a lifetime in aviation technology. More recently, I seem to remember a certain former president indicating that our military has technology "you can't even imagine". (NOT trying to start a discussion of said former president, so don't do it) That could have been something as simple as a computer virus that can take down an air defense network (as demonstrated shortly after said statement was made IIRC), or a 3000 mph flying tictac. Who knows? Thin, I know. But I guess going with "the simplest explanation is probably the correct one", that's where I landed.
So strap on your tinfoil hat and impart to me your insight!
If no one answers, I'll assume it isn't time yet . . . or ya'll have already been assimilated.
In reply to kazoospec :
The military industrial complex has royally screwed every single major public project over the last 25 years (LCS, Zumwalt, Coast Guard 123's, F-35, Ford-Class, etc, etc) so the chances of one being right is zero to me.
The fact that the Navy is releasing these videos and openly saying that they don't know what the contacts are and the Air Force is saying "it's not us" leads me to think it really is something/someone not terrestrial.
The way I understand it, isn't the new thinking something along the lines of "with so many planets being discovered in 'habitable zones' that the probability of alien life is almost guaranteed, but it's gotta be so far away that we'd never know.
Eh. I'm interested in the discussion, though I have no real valuable input. All I can say is all this "leaked" footage means little to me, as I trust the media even less than I trust the goobermint. it's a fun topic though.
Any time something like this gets released its to distract you from the big picture items.
Such as:
Inflation is going crazy.
Bill Gates + Eppstein and dirty policians
Covid was overblown.
Gas prices are through the roof.
(note, these are not my beliefs nor topics for discussion nor attempt to flounder)
Give the public something to discuss besides the actual topics at hand for a while. Our memory sucks.
UFOs are now called UAPs, Unidentified Aerial Phenomenons.
I dunno. My academic and lab experience says Prove It. But so many people have come forward over the years claiming to have been beamed up, even beating out hypnosis etc., what's the big secret? I've said it before, beam me up. Poke me, prod me, take samples, hell I'd even try to have one of your little gray babies; JUST LET ME WALK THROUGH THE ENGINE ROOM!!

If it's a super secret government project, they're doing a pretty bad job of keeping the secret. If it is something clandestine, then why release any audio/video or statements at all? Just continue to deny, deny, deny or call it swamp gas or something. The fact that these incidents are being openly discussed, by the military, and they're openly admitting (or cleverly claiming) that they have no idea what these are is a very new and unique tact from them regarding anything like this.
... and I agree with 93gsx. Not long ago all I heard was the flood across the border; flood's still going on but it's now gas, weather, something.
Sleight of Hand.
Sad.
It's dolphin technology. They have been trying to communicate with us for decades. Sadly, our poor communication skills can't get the conversation beyond being rewarded with tricks for giving them fish. If our brains could conceive of their massless anti-gravity technology, I'm sure they'd share it.

They're just checking in. You haven't figured it out yet? We're an intergalactic zoo. A sight to see on your way through the arm of the milky way.
From the Washington Post this week, an article under this headline:
For some Navy pilots, UFO sightings were an ordinary event: ‘Every day for at least a couple years’
link
I’m not a conspiracy theorist type but I feel the odds are they not only exist but contact has been made.
I think it's not just advanced military technology - a small fraction of it is (especially the slow floating ones, those are probably foreign military surveillance balloons), another fraction is misidentified uninteresting aircraft and natural phenomena such as meteorites. If we look at the interesting subset, the stuff that's confirmed from multiple viewpoints, radar etc and by all appearances is making a mockery of the laws of physics, this stuff cannot be advanced military technology, the idea that one country could secretly hoard incomprehensibly advanced technology like this is something straight out of a comic book. More likely it could be:
1. Unknown weather phenomena - something that looks like a moving physical object but is actually a form of energy? Similar to ball lightning perhaps?
2. Actual alien technology - almost certainly not a ship with little green men in it, but if there are aliens out there with hyper-advanced technology, this might be their drones or the end of some kind of portal being opened through space through which they can observe us which looks like a physical object. Highly unlikely but not impossible.
As a couple of ex NASA guys here like to say, nothing is immune to the laws of physics, energy in motion and all.

Men In Black is probably far closer to reality than you think.
Unidentified just means you don't know what it is. Does it seem a bit suspicious that these "things" seem to appear around military vessels and in military test areas? Why would aliens care about are super primitive military technology? Can we think of anyone who might?
Civilian drones are very capable now. Image what the military has. Weird floating thing around ships? I can't find the designation, but the Navy has had a sub launched autonomous surveillance helicopter drone for a while now.
As to why the military seems to be releasing a lot of this now? I don't know, but when we find one with "made in China" stamped on it, the story might change a bit.

It used to be a fairly widely accepted thing to talk about, especially UFOs, but then the Cold War happened and the gov didn't like the idea of anything unexplained flying in our airspace.
Too many Trekkies in the world. Here we are, floating around an unregarded yellow sun in the far western arm of the galaxy... I have no doubt there is life elsewhere in the universe. What I do have a problem with would be their ability to travel thousands or millions of light-years to get here, or better yet, why?

It could just be that military vessels and bases are more likely to notice the UFOs than civilian infrastructure.
In reply to thatsnowinnebago :
My "I've watched a lot of sci-fi movies" answer is: The military has a much larger radiation signature than the average civilian entity.
EDIT: Also: If they are smart enough to get here, they're smart enough to figure out what's a weapon and what isn't.
Also: If it's human made and isn't ours, it makes sense it would be focused on our military.

As terrible as the .gov is at keeping secrets, if this was the case, you would have known about it by now.

I went to high school with one of the main guys we are hearing about. He graduated between my brother and I and I consider him a friend. I think the footage of the Tic Tac is from his plane off San Diego. His name is Dave Fravor and he is one sharp dude. If it flies and it is built by us or our enemies he can identify it. He can't identify what he saw but he said he wants to fly whatever it is.

Counter Point:
People do know about it, but they are written off as conspiracy theorists. We do have the intelligence documents showing "conspiracy theory" was used as propaganda to discredit people
