In my local dry climate we have a ton of dead but clean cars. One that keeps coming through my Fb marketplace feed (thanks Uncle Mark) is the Mitsu Montero Sport.  Lots have blown head gaskets. Almost all spent all their lives on pavement and weren’t used to tow big trailers.

With an LS swap, would these be a viable, usable, fun suv again?  Say $2000 of swap goodies into a $500 shell?  Is the MS a good LS host?

No, real Monteros are cheap enough, get one of those instead.

Color me shocked that a Mitsubishi product is readily available with a blown head gasket.  I just can't hardly believe it.

It sounds like you just said: "Around me we have a ton of vintage SUVs that would benefit from a modern drivetrain, and I should look for one of those as a project."

See if you can find an 80 series Land Cruiser or a Blazer or something.

A Pajero is a Montero Sport.

Pretty good truck, my wife has had one for like 20 years, not a lick of trouble, tows well, 3.5 liter V-6 with plenty of power.
