Hey guys,

One of my friends at hockey Friday night came up with an idea to have a helmet cam worn by a player each week so we cold see, and hear how bad we really all are. I thought it was a great idea, and immediately thougt that a GoPro would maybe do the job. It would be great to maybe compile the video of the whole season into a "highlight" reel of sorts to watch at the end of season cookout I throw.

My question is what would I need to make this work on any number different helmets that the guys and girls wear? What do you think it would cost to get the stuff needed to do this? How much video can one of these things capture on a charge? How is the audio capabilities of these things so we can get some trash talk, or maybe grunts from our old bodies bumping into the boards?

The GoPro cameras come with a variety of attachments. I'd imagine the suction cup attachment would be the one to go for.

Sound wise I think you'd be fine. The sound is occasionally corrupted while using them in automotive applications, but for a hockey game I think it would come out well. (including trash talking)

Depending on how long the games run, the GoPro should be ok battery wise. They are good for 15-20 minutes or more of footage. It will be a bear to edit all of the footage you generate though.

I've used them for racing applications and been very pleased. Just make sure to do a "test" run before the real deal to make sure your camera angle is correct, and the settings are where you'd like them. I'd also make sure to use the protective case, as hockey is obviously a contact sport!

Price wise, they are pretty hard to beat--- $180 or so for the HD.

The suction mounts will probably work. Seeing it done on ATV videos makes me think there is a way. Should be plenty if hd space audio should pick up. Expect to pay a couple hundred per camera. Sounds like a cool idea. I'd check it out. A heavy impact will likely knock the camera off, though. Check out some go-pro filmed videos on youtube.

The Motorsports HD version of the GoPro comes with actual helmet mounts. See my video. The suction cup will be too large and ungainly to use in hockey. I'd attach a few of the helmet mounts to a few guys helmets and then get multiple shots like that. The audio should be great!

Get a stick-on helmet mounts per helmet and a few cameras to swap around.

I want to put this on my helmet when I ref games. Last night, for one play in particular. My roommate reffed another game, apparently his had an even more comedic/sad occurance that would have been prime material for this.

This. And the stick-on mounts are cheap, so you can have a bunch of guys with them and swap around. Its how I do go-kart video.

Sound, while using the open-backed casing, will be decent quality.

Downside of the helmet mount in sports is that people are looking around quickly, and it can make the viewer dizzy. The chest strap mount makes a lot of that go away. Plus would be cool for checking right into someone.

My GoPro came with three or four stick-on mounts.

Here's what it looks like to spectate with one worn:

The point you make about the helmet making the video viewer dizzy is one I thought of, but hadn't thought of the chest mount. Is the chest mount an option or just an idea you came up with? I am sure this will show just how bad we/I really are at hockey, but I want to do it anyway. I am sure we can fit it into the budget as I run the pick up hour, and last year we ended up with around $900 extra at the end of the season from having many weeks with more guys than needed to cover the fees for rental of the ice. What I usually do is just give a few free hours at the end of the season, pizza and beer on the last night, and the rest will cover some of the cost of the cookout I throw at my house at the end of the season. I suppose $200 or so wouldn't hurt us too much.
