Here is the issue. I have a odd shaped, small living room which has a large pantry right behind it. Since the living room is tiny and I'm wall mounting my TV, I would like to save the floor space for people traffic rather than a little home theater storage area for my receiver, cable box and dvd player. What I would like to do is put all of that in the pantry located behind the living room and either wirelessly or wired ( I could easily run a wire through the wall from pantry) relay the signal from each of my remotes to their respective counterparts. Would I need one of these for each remote? Any other ideas?

You want something called an IR repeater -- something like this
The sensor goes near your TV. Hole through the wall for the sensor's cable. Easy peasy -- have a similar setup running all the gear connected to my TV. It is nice to have just the TV in the room and all the junk and cables squirreled away out of sight!
Or just get a Logitech RF remote and an IR repeater and be done.
I have a Logitech Harmony 1100 and it does exactly what you are looking for, one remote, touch screen, programmable by what you want to do. This way, instead of clicking 4 remotes (dim the lights, power on the receiver, power on the PS3, power on the TV, change the inputs on the receiver, change the inputs on the TV) I just click "Play PS3" and it powers on and switches everything to where it should be.
Worth every penny.
I have all my gear in a closet across the wall from my TV, my last house had everything in a closet by the garage about 50' away from the TV. Guess which was easier to wire.
I've used the Powermid thing and it worked just fine. You don't need more than one; it'll repeat the signal from all of your remotes.
I've got this one. Works well.
