Having put their lives on the line isn't the point. Heck, the teachers aren't even the point. The students are the point. There are plenty of children of veterans and active soldiers who should get this day to spend with their families. And I would argue that, yes, teachers actually do what they do in order to serve their country, just in a very different way.
I'm jumping into the middle here- a halfassed veteran (Coast Guard), but when people thank me for my service, I make sure to note that I'm merely a cog in the machine. Each person (non criminal) who works serves to make the machine work.
Thanks for recognizing and honoring my brothers and sisters in arms- but if you take anything from this day, apply yourself to your work. Somehow your labor supports that idea that makes the U.S. a great nation.
