Getting the magazine on the shelf and merchandised well is a pain. What killed my magazine (Classic Cars & Parts) was switching distributors. We had a deal with one distributor to put our magazine in stores across the country. Well, that distributor pulled the rug out from under us and suddenly we had no outlets. We tried using UPS to get the magazines into the stores, but then we were relying on the store employees to merchandise the magazines on the shelves. That didn't work at all and things went to hell pretty quick. Sure we had subscribers, but not nearly enough. I got a phone call on a Tuesday morning telling me the magazine was done and to concentrate on the website. A whole building of damn good people got sent home before lunch while I was safe because I was both the web editor and the print editor.

The print magazine business is crazy, but there is room for it to survive in the right places (like GRM).
