Iwo was one of the nastiest engagements the US ever faced. No quarter given, no quarter taken.

My Dad enlisted in the Seabees at the age of 40. Late 1944. Extensive background in heavy equipment and surveying. They wanted him. He wound up on Iwo Jima. Seabees were on the beach right after the demo guys. He came back, but with 2 purple hearts. NEVER talked about it. Kinda wish he had, probably glad he did not. His belly was a roadmap of scars.
