I've commented a few times about how Top Gear has changed, and why I think the show has lost its edge. In Nov., James May said that Top Gear used to be about cars, but now the guys are just characters in a sitcom.

That is old news, but what brought it to focus for me is that I was just watching an episode of the James May/Oz Clarke wine tasting show. Something about it struck me as odd. I wasn't sure why at first, but then it hit me; I'm used to seeing James in the "boffin" mode, and here he's playing the prol....It seemed odd because I'm used to seeing Clarkson in that role.

it has but I still enjoy it enough to DL and watch it (thanks for the reminder... it's over an hr old now and I almost forgot to DL it :)

I can see him being a character in the show... and it was fun to seem him with Oz... seemed a little more natural...

and that article has made me wonder and go find James May's Man Lab to DL :)

If clarkson joined driver's republic/autocar it would be the ultimate car program.

e.g. something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhGJP65sBGo&feature=related

...but with clarkson adding in a tad of this, and top gear's camera work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaYW1mUE8RI

want to watch man lab.
The first several seasons of top gear are probably what keeps us loving it still, but I do enjoy most of the new episodes as well. I'm easy to please though.

Anybody seen the show May hosts where he gets people to build full size toys, like a Lego house, life size? Quite entertaining.

Yup. Probably the best representation of the real James May. Which is to say, big geek who loves and gets excited about all kinds of things.

I loved when he invaded the Chelsey Flower Show.

James May's Toy Stories I think it's called.

My favourite was the scaled replica of the Brooklands track, made out of Scaletrix. The giant Airfix Spitfire was pretty cool, too.

Agreed. That's why he's my favorite of the three.

I liked James May's Road Trip, as well. I thought it was damned interesting.

Toy Stories was phenomenal.

I went and watched the first episode on your recommendation. Awesome it is - often very funny, and James May certainly knows how to turn a phrase.

I loved the convoluted model train setup he built in their garage .
