The 18th Amendment was signed in 1919 and put into effect in 1920, can you imagine something of that scope today when people call 911 'cuz my Mac-Nuggets order is wrong ??

Sure I can imagine that just think Obamacare or the Financial Reform act. Both have much more far reaching consequences than Prohibition.
Geez. Can we avoid floundering for at least the first 10 posts? Please?
I shall remember today by brewing a beer and drinking several more!

I think so.
Today I am brewing... something I have yet to name. It will feature some tasty New Zealand hops and should end up amber to light-red with some fruity, woody, and spicy wine-like flavors (my flavor/aroma hop is named for its Sauvignon-like flavor).
I am drinking a southern German style Altbier which I brewed in honor of the 944Spec racing series.
Cheers!
My father got a beer making kit for Christmas, but he took it back for an exchange...
Maybe I'll hint for one for my birthday !
Any thoughts ?

Is that the picture next to "Insider Trading" in the Encyclopedia? It could have been on the cover of How to Use a Career in Politics to Get Rich in the Liquor Business" as well.
Yeah, don't buy a beer making kit. Go to DeFalco's liquor, http://www.defalcos.com/ and get what you need. Unless DeFalco's has a kit, then it would be OK to get a kit.

Sure I can. Banning alcohol and calling 911 about a bad order of Nuggies are the same thing, on different levels. Gub'ment, save us!
If you really think you're interested, don't go for one of the little "Mr. Beer" type kits. Find a home brew supply shop (preferably local, but online is okay) and buy a setup from them. It should run you around $100 including ingredients for your first batch of beer.
It's also pretty easy to find equipment on CL. Good for getting things like Carboys.
I recommend getting a kit with an auto-siphon instead of the basic wand, and pay a bit extra for a 6-gal instead of a 5-gal carboy. You'll still do 5-gal batches but the extra head space is really nice.
when i got home from my MtBike ride on a snow-covered trail today, i chugged a Smithwick's in celebration of Prohibition. it's not a great chugging beer, but it went down smooth and wanted another one to join it in my belly. i bummed it out by chasing it with a cup of "Lemon Lift" tea.
and FWIW, i hate me some kennedy. i want to throat-punch everyone who's ever used the term "America's Royal Family" and really meant it.

They appear to have Starter Kits (package of real equipment, not a Mr. Beer). There are other good sources out there. I like the looks of this kit from Northern Brewer better:
http://www.northernbrewer.com/brewing/starter-kits/better-basic-starter-kit.html
It does not include ingredients for a first batch, but the DeFalco's one uses pre-hopped extracts. The NB one, however, does include: an autosiphon, 6-gal carboy, blow-off tube, beer thief, and a non-iodine based sanitizer (good for those of us with dogs).

yawn...
Switzerland.. The country that gun lovers love to float as being their heaven also requires everyone to purchase insurance from private companies.. So.. There you go. A right wingers wet dream and worst nightmare all in the same place. They haven't imploded yet.. Maybe If we continue with the path of the health care bill + our lax gun laws.. We'll be like switzerland and a nice place to live..
I like beer.
Whoally Crap! Victory brewing has a Baltic Porter?!?
I frickin' LOVE Baltic Porter (and I like Victory BrewCo). One of my new favorite beer styles. I've got one fermenting away in the closet now for a couple weeks. It's being really ornery though, my first attempt at a lager, plus 9% abv makes for a really finicky and slow beer. After three weeks, and repitching yeast it's only at about 1.040 (granted, it started around 1.094).

I once bought a Mr. Beer kit from Harbor Freight.
Don't buy a Mr. Beer kit from Harbor Freight.

Sure!
We can reinstate the military draft and also force people to purchase things they may not need not want. Then we can rely on the rest of the Western powers to provide the real defenses. And build awesome roads that enthusiasts cannot afford to enjoy.
Then, we can have financial institutions that collaborate with the government to steal and hoard the plunder of oppressed masses.
Oh, wait. Doesn't American processed, pasteurized cheese already taste like Swiss-lite?

ohh come on you throw that when the 2nd post in the thread is an obvious uninformed flounder. Very sadly uninformed.
Thousands and thousands of small breweries closed due to prohibition and never reopened putting hundreds of thousands of jobs off the record books. When the law was repealed very few of these breweries opened and the new system of distribution stifled competition to the point that new breweries only started to show up in the 1980's..
I know its popular in your circles to deride current legislation, but maybe you should look at history before you start throwing around platitudes..
Heres an idea. Go watch this. http://beerwarsmovie.com/

Marge, I'm going to the basement, avenge death.
If the healthcare law is as wildly unpopular as some wish...it will get repealed. If not, it will stay like Social Security, Medicare, and the added straight to the deficit Prescription Drug Law for seniors. I'm ok with this.
One of my fav's lately.
There's a tripel I like too but I can't remember how the spell the manufacturers name. Belgian I think.

I would, but like local homebrew shop pretty much refuses to sell anything to me. No matter what I go in for, they tell me that's not what I want and I won't like it. My BIL homebrews a lot, and often gives very specific requests for gifts, etc. so I'll go in and say "I'd like 2 pounds of XXX, and a pack of YYY, please." They won't sell any ingredients unless you bring in a recipe proving you need them. My BIL makes his own crap up off the top of his head and doesn't follow any recipe, and even if he did, I don't have it.
WTF? It's the oddest business model I've ever encountered, but it works for them somehow, because they're still in business 10 years later. Maybe they're like surfers protecting their break from greemies, or something.
carguy123 wrote: Sure I can imagine that just think Obamacare or the Financial Reform act. Both have much more far reaching consequences than Prohibition.
Yup.
And beer making? I drink beer for pleasure. There are bigillions of different beers out there, most of which I like to drink. I don't begrudge anyone for making their own, and I have myself, but to me it just makes something I enjoy into work. I don't fish or hunt either, as I can buy all of these things in the store.
