More so, who knew there was a forum for tow truck operators?

Hmm... Should I say that SUVs aren't made for towing again or should I just sit here all smug with knowledge?
Guarantee speed + wind + short wheelbase caused this.

I did. Actually worked on a forum for two truck drivers once. There's a forum for almost anything.

Cherokee's wheelbase is about the same as a short bed pickup isn't it? Look at the front of the trailer, do you see any leveling bars or those friction thingies to keep the tail from wagging the dog?

I will give him credit for a pretty good tie down job! With the rollover thing, people roll cars all the time without trailers attached. Saying its one particular design that caused it without knowing the situation is kindof silly.
the jeep owner was probably bringing his baby home. It probably started out as a very happy day for him. YEAH!! I going to get my MGB!
that is a grand cherokee as well, which is better at towing than a regular cherokee.
bet he was going too fast, with not enough tongue weight....
Sorry, JmfnB, I'm going to have to disagree.
It was about loading, and not enough toung weight. You'll flip a duallie if you miss-load it badly- trust me- I've had the training, and it was very fun to drive with -200lb toung weight.
Should have been able to load that easily to be stable. I'll still tow my Alfa with my short wheel base Edge. Yes, FWD Edge.
Eric
Alfadriver has it right... in evaluating a tow vehicle, the load must be considered.
My 27hp Trabant came new with a factory towing package... and for what it was intended to be towing, it made a "safe" tow vehicle.
A Jeep GC has more than enough wheelbase and brakes to be able to safely tow a load this size (though I wouldn't be hooking one to a 10,000lb race trailer)...
Looking at the MGB placement on the trailer, it does not appear to me that low tounge weight would be an issue... though that is indeed the #1 culprit for accidents like this.
So it could have been a number of alternative issues... even tractor and trailers can jack-knife and roll given the right situation.

Just curious as I sold my trailer, but would load levelers and a friction brake helped or save that?
Dan
I strongly doubt tongue weight was involved. The trailer sits front forward after the accident and while I know there is accident damage to the trailer I would bet it still looked the same in the beginning.
No trailer brakes, sway control or other ride safety devices are used on the trailer but the truck is set up with a 7 pin box at the hitch meaning dudes sailbot trailer probably has brakes.
I stand by my assessment that Speed + Wind + SWB caused this accident and a LWB truck would have reduced the chances of double roll over.
I've towed thousands of miles with a 2000 Grand Cherokee. The 7 pin connector is part of the factory tow package, by the way. Never had a sketchy moment at all. The trucks can certainly do the job, and shouldn't have had a problem with this load. Of course, we know none of the story at all.
I think it was the kayak mounted to the roof of the Cherokee.

Am I the only one ammused by the fact that the MG/trailer combo was loaded on to the flat bed upside down. I understand that they couldn't just flip it back over on sceane, but it is good for a laugh.
I will say one thing..
Good deal on the Cabin Integrity on that Jeep. No issues at all.
edit Bad deal on my grammar ugh....
