Saw it this weekend. Never read the books, so it was all new to me. Wasn't too bad, but they jammed a lot of material into 2 hours. It's a shame, because I think if they'd done more character development instead of plot/explosions it would have been better. I think they could have made it a franchise movie but they're going to need to make sure the second one is better than the first...
Read the books. Might watch the movie when netflix gets it.
Never read the books, saw the trailer.
It looks like it's even below rental material.
What the hell is the story about?

I wasn't planning to see it, but I did read it's getting shredded in reviews - much echoing your comments about too much, too fast. It's reported to have cost some $350m to make and will need to gross $600m to break even.
I've been afraid to see it so far. I've been afraid too much would get lost in translation from the books. Part of the fun of the books was the leisurely style you were introduced to new things. It allowed you to get used to them and learn the nuances.
I'll probably see it this weekend.
I've read the books a loooong time ago. They were written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, same guy that gave us Tarzan. If you have children that are not interested in reading, think about these. The stories move along quick enough to not be boring and it's about an 8th grade reading level.
John Carter moved to Mars, Dad was an Earthling, Mom was a Martian.
There is that whole political nonsense about red Martians vs green Martians.
