Well that was a fun way to go into my three day weekend. I was just laid off from work. It wasn't the best job but it brought money in. I am still waiting on hearing back from the BLM guys on my project with them. I also have a rancher here local that needs help setting up monitoring system for his water usage across his property.
Crappy thing is around here there are virtually no jobs so I may end having to relocate. That sucks because my house is paid off here so moving means getting back into rent or mortgage again. Doubt I will be able to sell this place easily. Also Tiff just got a new job that she loves and it would suck for us to have to relocate just when she is getting into something new.
ugh.. that just sucks. If Tiff's job can cover the expenses for a while, might be worth to sit tight and look for work
DANG!!!! Good luck, I hope you don't have to relocate. Any chance the layoff is temporary or is it a known permanent thing?

If Tiff is up to the lifestyle, might be worth it to look into North Dakota oil. Typical pay is ~90k a year, 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. If I wasn't somewhat tied down where I am, I'd be there for 2-3 years giving my retirement account a huge jumpstart, then going back to the other life I'm in.
Good luck

Well I hope it works out for the best.

Yeah kinda sucks the whole just graduated just married and just laid off. Ah well I will find a way to make things work. If I comes down to it I might look into that South Dakota work. Might be able to put my geology studies to use, maybe.

Tell us more about what you do and what you want to do. This is a close-knit community. If there is an opening in your field, someone here might know and be able to help.
How do you feel about Oklahoma?

Sorry I don't have anything genuinely helpful. I just hope it works out for you like the last couple of friends of mine who lost their jobs only to get vastly superior jobs not too long after...
The oil fields is a good place to look for work, but it also burns you out. I work with a few geologists that got their start out there and the longest any of them made it was 10 months. Its great experience and you can rack up some cash along the way. The company i work for right now is expanding like crazy and we are always looking for geologists, the only catch is its in Milwaukee. Good luck on the search though.
Hang in there.......something good is bound to happen.......
If it's any consolation, this would be a much better thread if you took the last word off.

That sucks - sorry to hear it. How's the gunsmith thing coming along - could you make that work alongside Tiff's new gig?
Thanks for the support guys. I will write up a bit more later still kinda shocked and trying to figure out how to tell Tiff when she gets home for lunch.
On the ffl front things are on hold due to funds and the fact it would be difficult be competitive when even established companies are having trouble getting parts. I need to find a machinist i can work with so i might be able to build a design rattling around my head. I might rebuild my old leather business and expand my offerings there to help build up some cash reserve.
On a side note I should have more time to work on the car and go fishing.
Leather business? I'd like to do some leather artwork. I was going to use deer. Family usually gets a couple reach year.
Keep your head up, things will turn around.
I've been there twice so I know how you feel.
My only advice is if you love geology, keep looking in that direction. I moved away from the world of entomology after the first layoff and I've regretted it every since.
Entomology is fascinating. I always think, "ooh, blattodea!" before stomping a roach.

I just read this title and my brain cut off the last word. It is a much happier story when you do that.

You have a very, very good school of entomology there in Gainesville.
Funny enough there is an entomology job open right now paying about $80,000 a year. Wish I had the experience for that one.
On a side note the big boss tech supervisor for our area is away on vacation right now. One of the CO techs called him and told him they are E36 M3 canning me and he was pissed. No one told him anything about it and he is basically the last to know. The techs in the back are not happy about this either. My co worker that works front of shop with me said she won't stay so she she is going to start looking for another job as well. They basically want her to do both of our jobs now.
I am putting in for some local archaeology positions though most are temporary. Hoping my BLM deal goes through then I will be set. If I am out of work to long I may start spending more time up at the gold claim seeing what I can pull out. Last year we were pulling gold and platinum. I let the rancher know when I can start working on his project and he is going to see if any others need the same work done.

Boy, I could walk away from here taking only the essentials for that.
Have you tried the USGS? I know with the budget crap going on they may not be hiring, but I suspect anybody that can retire may do it as soon as they can and get the berkeley out of Dodge.
Geology? Don't go digging around at the Suddard's.
Bs or Ms in geology? If you're willing to relocate, there are a lot of jobs in the oil & gas industry in Houston, okc, or Tulsa. Even better if you'd be willing to go to midland.
