My last day will be August 30th, they made an offer that if you're and old guy and can retire, we'll give you $25,000 to go away so we don't have to lay off these young guys.

I'll bite, I was going to go anyway in September, 42 years with the same company is enough, I'm 60. Mrs. 914 wants to travel this winter, New Mexico, Arizona, perhaps Texas.

If I was staring down retirement, I'd probably get out a world atlas and my advrider.com login and start planning something that takes me off this continent for a while. Be gone for a long time and worry about what's next when I get home.

I'm also unmarried, in my 30's, and rent my home. Your mileage may vary.

Congrats I think. Its always a good thing when you can retire and have a list of things that you want to do and the ability to do them.

25 large. Woa. Don't spend it all in the same place. Congrats, through, if that's what you wanted.

Some people can't handle retirement. I think that the GRM reader type of person can keep occupied. I am quite sure I could stay busy every day for the rest of my life and never work. I'm pretty sure I have enough automotive projects queued up now for that. It was with great restraint that I passed on a 63 Elan with a S2000 engine/trans, Hoosiers, autocross champ, etc., for nine large.

Congratulations. Twenty five grand to retire a month early? As long as there's not a big impact on your pension, that's not a bad deal.

I can retire in five weeks if I want to, but I expect to stay another 15 years. It's nice to know that you can if you have to though...

And do it when you are young enough to still do something.

$25k? That's nice. Most places I've worked at couldn't care to give out squat. Most retiree's I know end up busier retired than when employed.

Sorry, it's a '67, and a ZETECH, not S2000. Don't know where I got that. Here:

Well if you can get off then europa subject I guess I will throw this out! I got it in a deal, prior owner spent $23k having caterham stuff a new ZETECH in it, it is a former ASP national champ autox car, race suspension still intact. Right after he had all this done he got sick it sat for couple years and I did a restoration on his other elan, in exchange he gave me this car. I have a Europa on my bucket list, but have lots of cars I am currently playing with and want this Elan gone before I get attached! It has a valid calif pink slip hugh flairs 225x45x13 Hoosiers all around. Can email pictures, someone just put it on bringatrailer.com price is down to $9,000 It is in nor calif Lodi 209-333-2008 or cortinalodi@...

Thanks guys. The hard part is I still like what I do and feel appreciated, but it's time to recycle.

GPSnorkel: She doesn't ride but does enjoy the view from the back. We plan on some 3-5 day trips in the Adirondacks on the LT.

Woody: No effect, this is incentive to get you to jump. My wife retired in March, same deal, $25k, she foolishly said in front of witnesses "I invested mine, you can do whatever you want with yours". Because they don't take retirement out of your retirement and don't tax part of your income, Trish is making $150/month more retired than when she worked.

Dr. Hess: I really really want to build an ALF Speedster. As a glider pilot it is a short few hours of stick time and a sign off to get a Light Sport power license. My friend has a Fly Baby which turns my head. He built it when he was in college.

Fly Baby. http://www.bowersflybaby.com/

65 - 85hp flat four, wood frame, canvas cover. The open cockpit and noise makes it a hoot to fly, think MGTD.

congrats … I retired at 63 1/2 … (that age so I could have COBRA to carry me through to Medicare) …

plenty to do, a 60 yr old house, a 90 yr old Mom, and a racecar … LOL

plus I'm just naturally lazy

and as long as the market doesn't crash, I'm in the same boat with Trish (figuratively) … my "take home" is more now than when I was working

and all I got was a "don't let the door hit you in the ass as you leave" … though they now have 3 people doing what I did by myself

Congrats 914,

60 sounds like the right age to retire if you can do it. I've known too many folks who retired later and had little left physically for enjoying the retirement years.

Payday today, and about half of my post tax went into retirement funds. So maybe I'll get there in 35 years or so.
