So yesterday I was walking home from the library with a couple new books for my upcoming europe trip and I decided it makes no sense to have these big ass things in my backpack. I didn't think I would like the Kindle but decided to give it a shot because of this.

Fast forward to today...I now have a kindle and now I realize the books I originally wanted are either not in kindle form or checked out. I was hoping to use this thread to get recommendations for other books to download/read, especially if I can get them through the library.

Ideas?

Water for elephants was a great book I really enjoyed, and is available on Kindle.

My wife is reading a book called Gone Girl, and claims to love it. As soon as shes done with it, I will import it into my phone via Kindle app.

There are also some fascinating reads for free in the self-publishing arenas, like Smashwords.com and feedbooks.com. Most are available in kindle format.

Thanks, just downloaded water for elephants.

So far I have a couple travel guides uploaded, some Dean Koontz and James Patterson.

Not really sure what I like. Anything suspenseful, enlightening, humorous, travel related, sports related, auto biographies, etc.

Willing to try anything.

Just thought of one:
Driving Like Crazy: Thirty Years of Vehicular Hell-bending, Celebrating America the Way It's Supposed To Be -- With an Oil Well in Every Backyard, a Cadillac Escalade in Every Carport, and the Chairman of the Federal Reserve Mowing Our Lawn by PJ O'Rourke. Absolutely hilarious.

Check out the Kindle lending library (I think that might only be available if you have Amazon Prime, though). Only one book a month but I've borrowed a couple of books that way which I kinda wanted to read but not bad enough to open the wallet wide.

for the free stuff sometimes you need to use a program like calibre to convert to a compatable format for the kindle... has a bit of a learning curve.

amazon also has TONS of free books...

the kindle lending library is pretty neat, my wife used it while we had amazon prime... also you can barrow books from friends which is pretty neat.

many local libraries have a kindle loaner program thing... I know mine does

If you haven't read Dan Brown's books those are really good, I just read the latest one Inferno in 3 days.

And depending on where you are in Europe you may be able to visit some of the places in the book. He does a lot of research prior to writing the book and he uses real places you can visit.

In fact I don't like the project Gutenberg, yes they are all classical, but I am not that into those "boring" classicals.

I subscribed 10+ sites which colletct legal free Kindle books in my feeds, visit them once a week and pick out 2-3 books I love. Maybe fantasy, romantic, horror or comedy.

FYI, I get all my feeds from this list, it contains more than sixty sites to download the free books for Kindle.

A lot of Jules Verne is interesting. HG Wells, too.

yup not difficult to find... but it sucks to read on an e-ink reader and barely tolerable on a 7" tablet... this next semester I've got a few books that are "ebooks" in PDF format... you can convert them but in my experience the formatting is often screwed up... I'm considering buying a 10" tablet this next semester... or I might just print the dang thing out.

The "Silo" series of 3 books starts with "Wool," and it's very good. The author self-published them direct to e-reader format, so buy them. They're pretty cheap at $6 a piece, and they make very entertaining reads if you're into books like "Gone Girl."
