Thanks for the suggestions, folks! I've got both Steam and Origin installed on my PC.
And I should probably dust off Knights of the Old Republic and play those again.

I've bought 3 gaming laptops from the site xotic pc. A Sager one i'm using now i've had for about 4 years and it's still running strong. Was able to play Attila Total War on it when that came out still.
Xotic PC laptops really are excellent. This one cost me only like $1100 and it's lasted years.

Thanks! I'm going to check that out!

I love mine. They're whores for juice but when you're shopping, you're hard pressed to find a better deal. The only real problem I had was a flaky keyboard, and that was after several years of abuse.
Oh lord are the Asus ROGs energy hogs, mine (G53S) doesn't even have integrated graphics, it just idles on a 560M, the giant battery was only good for 2 hours when it was new.
I would not recommend though, unless they've beefed up the power jacks (mine failed) and improved the warranty claims process and customer support in the last couple years. I can expand/rant on this if y'all want.
I hesitate to even bring this up, but what would GRM be without someone offering you something other than what you asked for?
If you bought this and the console of your choice, you'd have a (admittedly bulkier) solution that'd save you several hundred dollars over the comparable laptop.

GRM would not be the same. The very concept of GRM implies that people will understand the situation, and solve it however they see fit. The question "how do I solve problem x using tool y?" will aways get answers that don't presuppose y is the best tool.
That's why I like it here.

This is true, the support is bogus as balls. Fortunately for me, I consider warranties as useful as a dick on my forehead, and do my own work when o can. When my gpu flaked because of the thermal paste, I tore it apart myself. When my wife smashed the screen hulk style, I did it myself.

That. Is. Awesome.
Part of the allure of PC gaming, however, is modding, something which you can't do on a console. HOWEVER, Forza is only on the XBOX, so...
In reply to mndsm:
I have similar feelings on warranties, unless it's a computer that I paid something like $1100 for (and retailed for closer to 2 grand) with less than a year of mostly being parked on a desk on it. Then I kinda expect the manufacturer to promptly admit and fix their berkeley up. Not try to blame me for it from halfway around the world on a connection that sounds like a broken CB radio, and then ship it fed ex ground with no insurance.
If it breaks again I'll probably run a couple 14 gauge wires out the hole where the jack used to live, and lock the new jack into one of the k slots.

Replace the console in that case with a beastly semi-compact gaming PC (steam machine?) ?

The times might be a-changing for console modding, Bethesda recently announced that XBONE users will be able to apply PC mods in Fallout 4.
I imagine it will be a bit more restricted, though. Perhaps just the Bethesda approved mods?

Then I might just be buying that portable screen. Plus, I could use that on my older consoles ('360, PS3, PS2, etc.).
