Same here, love to eat, hate to gamble. I always hit the buffet at Paris.

There's at least one place there that does supercar track days, and I know there's one that does trophy truck (dirt) track days (Vegas Off Road Experience).

I like to give this travel tip to everyone going to Vegas. You may not be going to gamble, but if you're more concerned with things outside of casino's to do while saving some money, check room prices at Circus Circus. Not the nicest hotel, but it has an interesting feature. There is a strip club 2 blocks away, that has people standing on almost every corner offering free limo rides, pretty much from anywhere in Vegas to the club. USE IT. A free limo ride with a stocked bar beats the hell out of $30+ for a cab ride from across town. When we were there for a week, twice we used the limo as a free taxi, just got to the club and walked back to the hotel, never even went inside.

I recommend checking out the Heart Attack Grill for food while you're there. They cook the fries in pure lard, which tastes even better than it sounds. And if you weigh over 350lbs, your meal is free.

The Linq has a car collection that's worth printing the free ticket to see. Wide variety, most for sale.

Visit Shelby for their free tour. They have the first Cobra, among other goodies.

There is a pretty large car museum in one of the casinos, can't remember which one, I do recall my gf found free admission tickets on line.

If your a foodie. Yardbird is fantastic, they won a Baird award for a reason and it shows. Not terribly expensive as well for as good as it is. Its southern and if like cobbler order it when you have the meal. Nobu is always good as well there. Near the new stadium next to Monte Carlo there is a chicken and waffle place called Blickey which is amazing and seriously cheap.

If you stay towards city center and want to make your wife happy do a high or low tea at the Marian Oriental one morning.

When we are there we stay at Vdara or Encore as they always cut us a huge deal mid week. Drinks at the Monte Carlo High roller are not bad in terms of price and its fun to people watch there at night.

All the shows are good but I would skip absinthe, the cerc like show at the Wynn is amazing. I think it is called la rev.

The Neon Museum north of downtown Vegas is a must see if you're a bit of a history buff, plus the old signs are just neat. They do daytime and nighttime tours. Either one is good.

If you have the time, going to Boulder City and taking one of the Hoover Dam tours is pretty fun.

The Friday/Saturday night buffet at the Monte Carlo is very expensive, but it is very tasty.

I think the Tropicana still has the "Mob Vegas Experience" very interesting bit of history, with a little Casino style test at the end to rate you level of mobster.

I know there were 2 or 3 places to go out in supercars on a track, but the names escape me. Machine gun rentals are abundant as well if you've never used one before. Kinda pricey on a cost per round basis, but definitely an experience. The "package" I bought was $350, and it was 25 rounds with a sub machine gun, 25 rounds with a belt fed, 20-30 with an AK/M16, and 3 rounds with a 50 cal sniper rifle. Definitely fun if you enjoy shooting sports or just want to try it out.

What I didn't do, and kind of want to even with my terrible fear of heights were the cheap (sub $100 a head) helicopter tours of the Hoover Dam and other places. Indoor skydiving was fun, although I about had a panic attack because of my fear of heights.

I'll have to dig out one of my old harddrives, I have several lists of free and almost free things to do, as well as "universal" style rewards things to sign up for that can get you discounts, show tickets, meals, etc. for pretty cheap. As big and money driven as Vegas is, there are a LOT of ways to have a bunch of fun for next to nothing just in the hopes that you gamble.

If you LOVE Thai food. You must eat at Lotus of Siam. Fantastic food, fantastic prices and fantastic wine list. Appearances can be deceiving since it is located at a strip mall off the strip.

Penske has a exotic car dealership at the Wynn, or they did when I was there.

Hoover Dam - bucket list material

If you are up for a LONG day - Grand Canyon, for both of these rent a car - don't take one of those damn tour busses. Rent the car BEFORE you get to Vegas - once you are there they want $$$$'s.

The Buffet at Aria and at Caesers Palace were excellent.

Gordon Ramsay's Pub was pretty good as well.

We took the tour bus to the Grand Canyon. It was great to not have to drive ourselves since the wife and I could take a nap. The two stops at McDonalds weren't great, but now we know to avoid that. We also know to bring more clothes since it can be bloody cold there depending on all sorts of variables. We took the Pink Jeep tour which was good fun. Next time we'd probably book the jet boat tour.

If you do the big ferris wheel, hit up Groupon or the like for cheaper tickets and get on one of the cars with the beverage service. It becomes how much can you drink in 30 minutes while taking in the sites, but its still pretty fun. Hitting this at night or at dusk is pretty cool, IMO.

I live here. If you want awesome but overpriced food, there are plenty of good restaurants on The Strip. If you want awesome and cheap food, get off the Strip. I just had lunch at a Peruvian restaurant (try to find one of those in your city!). Half a roasted chicken, super yummy, fries and a salad for $7.

If you like Shelby, go see Shelby. As a casual enthusiast, I did the whole place in 1/2 an hour. The collection at the Linq is a better use of your time, IMO.

If you want more specific food recommendations, send me a PM.

What's the best pool in Las Vegas?

We're looking for someplace we can sit by a pool all day and drink cheaply.

Thanks for the info/tips! We are renting a car so the mobility factor is on my terms. I'm also kind of using this trip to help decide if this is an area I'd even want to move to at some point down the road (retirement). Living in a meteorological tumbler all my life may make me appreciate this climate that much more.

Sorry, can't help with that one.

You see, most residents (or as we call ourselves, "locals") avoid the strip like the plague, largely because it's full of tourists who have had too many cheap drinks :)

You're in Flagstaff, if I recall. If you want to sit by a pool and drink cheap drinks, might I suggest saving yourself 100 miles (each way) of driving and going to Laughlin, NV instead? Rooms are cheaper than Vegas, drinks are cheaper than Vegas, and it's right on the Colorado River.

I go there for weekend getaways all the time.

Oh, it's a tumbler, just like anyplace else. Just a different tumbler. I used to live in Michigan. the temperature spread was about 90 degrees F, from 0F-90F. Here, there is likewise a 90 degree spread, except it's from 30F to 120F. You pays your money and you takes your choice.

Honestly, if there was anyplace else I could live... anyplace on the entire freaking planet... where I could make the money I make in my trade and have the lifestyle I have here, I would have moved there 5 years ago.

When I went, I just liked to meander after midnight and watch the madness of tourists gone wild. Vegas is one of those places where people who don't leave town much like to go and go wild.

Went to a ramen place not too far from the strip. Jinya, I think it was called. Pretty good.

I highly recommend Fremont street at night. Get a mystery frozen drink in a novelty cup and check out the pretty lights and cacophony.

I've been to Vegas twice. Never really enjoyed the city, but there was good food to be found. We went to a really good Ramen place downtown, forget the name.

Personally I think Vegas is best used as a jumping off place to see national parks. Grand Canyon is (barely) doable as a day trip, but I prefer the closer and more beautiful Zion. Death Valley is close and really interesting too, but I wouldn't go this time of year unless you really want to lose water weight.
