EDIT - it's a problem with a BMW X3 that doesn't want to start.
Asking for a friend. His SO's car is not starting and the temperature gauge shoots to Armageddon. Once in a while when the gauge behaves, the car will start.
Anyone been down this road before? Thanks in advance.
So the engine is in fact cold when this occurs?
Tell me if I have it right:
Crank cold car. It cranks but does not start. Temperature guage goes full scale, or nearly so.
Edit: Seems to be a fairly common problem. No clear solution. Some suggest coolant temp sensor. Bad sensor fails to hot, engine management prevents engine from starting. Plausible.

That's exactly the situation.
If you google around on the internet, you'll find a lot of people have the same problem, and it's not just on X3's. I think I'd start by replacing the coolant temperature sensor. But that's just a guess based on 5 minutes of reading.

I’d almost think a relay somewhere since it is sort of intermittent
