I'm trying to start implementing more robotics projects for my self education.
I know there's 4 generations of Mindstorm out there, the latest being EV3. I also know they're expensive as all hell.
Is buying older generations (used) worth it, from a learning perspective? Are parts compatible across generations, to include Technic pieces?
Robotics? Look at Vex robotics. It's sort of an evolved technics/mindstorm setup.
Older "Power Function" setups aren't really "Smart". They typically communicate with a remote control. Great for powering stuff like RC cards and Trains (as well as "Machines") but have no automation.
Newer "Powered Up" stuff is three different hubs, all Bluetooth. Nice thing about this is that the programming can be done a pad or phone via the PoweredUp app.

Next are the "Smart Hubs" - the EV3, NXT, and RCX.
These allow you to do programming on the Smart Hub - downside is that the programming is more crude (although I believe Wifi allows for some ability to write programs on a computer and send to the bot).
Personally, I'd get a Move Hub and a bunch of sensors and motors.
