I have an interview just outside of Savannah, GA next week. The family and I are driving down this weekend to get a feel for the area probably drive past a few houses we've saved on Zillow and maybe try to find a realtor we like if everything goes according to plan. This is sort of a vacation and sort of a sighting lap for a prospective career advancement for me. What to do, where to eat, what to see? That sorta thing, learn me hive, learn me. We are driving down, going to be staying in a hotel that is yet to be determined and have two kids under two.
Was in Savannah in February. Lovely little town. Do not be alarmed that literally everything is owned by SCAD.
Do the hop on hop off bus tour right away, then plan your day around it. Great food in numerous areas of town.

I second this. If it's your first time, the trolley is an easy way to see just about everything you need to see.
I'd wait for later trips to explore on foot.
Paula Deen has a restaurant in Savannah that is (or at least, was) amazing if you like to stuff yourself full of southern style comfort foods. I haven't spent much time in Savannah proper, but Tybee Island is down the way and is awesome. A very nice, quaint, much less commercial feeling beach town than some of the big names (Orange, gulf shores, etc) if you like that kind of thing.
Congrats on the interview! New industry/role?

We are very familiar with the touristy beach towns of South Baldwin County, Alabama on account that my FIL lives on the outskirts of Gulf Shores. So that's good to hear that Savannah doesn't follow that suit.
This would be a new industry to me but getting back into a product development role is very exciting to me.

I'll give the trolley a google. Sounds like a good sunny day activity the wife would enjoy.
I don't know much about Savannah, but Roebling Road Raceway is just outside of town and a lot of fun.
Tourism is the main industry in town. Then shipping. Some aerospace. The governor of GA has done a fantastic job attracting business to the state and the port is a vital component. It gets hot. Congrats on the job opportunity!
Its a cool old town with tons of good food and entertainment. And yeah, SCAD is highly influential and they are a major reason why the place isnt a flaming chithole.
The suburbs like Pooler and Richmond Hill are growing at exponential rates. You probably won't reside in the historic district downtown where all the tourist sites are. So check out where you will live every day.
Isle of Hope is my favorite neighborhood.
I second Roebling Road as a great little (but fast) regional track.

We've been looking at different areas on zillow basically all aloong I-16 from Pooler to almost Statesboro. Lots of new builds and HOAs which is not our jam.
Our son has lived in the area for about 10 years. Savannah is a really fun city. There is history, art, touristy stuff and great food. The suburbs are booming, Pooler and Richmond Hills are some of the nicer areas but there are still places that aren't all stores, condos and HOAs. We visit a few times a year and my DIL always finds fun places to go with the grandkids; wild life refuge with alligators and other exotic creatures, a couple of old forts, interesting museums, beaches, great food all over the place. If you do the touristy thing, take the trolley, you will get to see so much more. You can walk alot of the city but with little ones they will get tired fast. Be prepared for hot and humid in the summer. Congrats and good luck
Oh yeah, traffic on I-16 and surface streets at commuter time is becoming horrible
A friend of mine has a co-op in Savannah while he is getting his Masters degree and spends half the year there and half the year here in Florida, and he loves it. Every time he sends me pictures, he is doing or trying something new. I’ve personally been to Savannah maybe three times, but my favorite parts are the parks, the food, and the relaxed open feel of the riverfront.
We really enjoyed the food, sunshine and friendly locals last week. The wife and I met with a realtor and found a house we really like.
I'm waiting on a formal offer to call my realtor in WI, new realtor in GA and my mortgage guy to see if he can service GA.

Yeah. I heard it's bananas getting tickets.
Nothing to add other than it's one of many places on my list I've looked at and the price seems right. A little less "DoNt MoVe HeRe!!!" and "wErE fUlL" than the rest of the south and Florida.
Good luck on the job offer.

This is a great way of putting it. The area is growing pretty rapidly with the Port and the Hyundai MetaPlant but is still small and not busy compared to even the Milwaukee and Madison metro areas we are used to in Wisconsin.
