Title says it all.

Currently a systems test engineer and while the pay, benefits, location, coworkers, and company culture is all well and good, I can't help but think about what an experience a motorsports engineer would be.

I have a colleague who worked for Ford's Le Mans team and he said while it was fun doing race car stuff, long hours and living out of a suitcase was not his cup of tea. I can't imagine it would be mine either, but having that experience under my belt is something that I would love to have. I've talked to him a bit about it, and he said he really just kind of lucked into that role while working at Ford as an R&D engineer.

I'm well aware the pay, benefits, work/life balance, and overall quality of the work may not be the best in the world. I'm also aware that it's one of the lower paying engineering jobs, at least at the entry/middle level positions. But that still doesn't mean it's not an experience I'd want to have.

I'm looking at how to get my foot in that door. I'm not particularly averse to going the same route my colleague did, but I'd rather just start in motorsports in the first place if I'm not going to be in it for very long.

TL;DR I want to slut around careers for a little bit and experiment with motorsports engineering before settling back into a comfy (although maybe a bit boring) career. How can I get my foot in the door for that?
