Got one for my birthday and I love it. It takes on a patina with time and use, goes good with my raw denim. Made in 'Murica too.

Walk into your local Tandy Leather or perhaps your local leather store. Buy a nice belt for $20

And choose your buckle from the display next to the belts.

Under $25 total and will last a decade or two. My current one is 15 years old and the only reason I am thinking about replacing it is the dog chewed the retainer loop off when she was a puppy

I actually just use a $10-$20 solid leather strap belt from American Eagle.

Gets worn 7 days a week, i wear it working on cars, it gets dragged all over concrete, etc etc etc.

Currently.... 7(?) years old and barely shows any wear.

I have a carhartt leather belt that I wear daily. It's at least 8 years old. I just bought another, as it looks a little too worn for nice occasions, but works fine. With my new job, we have a uniform shorts/pants, that I must wear about 30 days a year. The carhartt one doesn't fit. I bought a nylon belt from cabelas. I bought is as it as a multi tool buckle. The tool isn't much good for anything save the bottle opener. However it has held up quite well.

really doesn't matter if the other tools don't work … as long as the bottle opener was good

SWMBO bought me an LL Bean leather belt about 5 years ago, and it's still in great shape.

I wear it 7 days a week and unless I'm going on a plane it has a leatherman on it.

The semi-official sizing procedure is, if you have a waist smaller than 40", you punch a new hole where you want it and trim off the excess if you feel like it.
Not if you're wearing it with a $1500 suit it's not

personally, I think that you would look worse in a suit with no belt then with one you cut to lenght. google 30" mens dress belt if you want to buy one.

Maybe I'm hard on belts, but I can't get a leather belt to last 6 months.

Suggestions?

What happens to them, do they break or stretch or the buckle fails or what?  Are you (ahem) on the heavy side?  I had a coworker who was one of those guys who probably measured 48" around the waist but wore 36" pants so his belt was as tight as a guitar string; I remember one time in the office he bent over to pick something up and his belt snapped in two.

Oops, sorry...I didn't notice this was a zombie thread.

I usually buy LL Bean belts because they are solid leather - one brown, one black.

They used to serve me well for a couple years, but this last set has been stretching like crazy. I have to punch a new hole about every 6-8 weeks.

I am losing some weight, but I sure wish it was as much as those belts make it look like I am.

Any suggestions?

I have switched to a nylon ratchet belt. I can't believe I waited so long.

works like a zip tie.  The old leather belt with a traditional buckle seems so crude when suddenly you can adjust the length in 2mm increments. Apparently my waistline changes throughout the day and this belt can accommodate that with a touch of a lever

I have a leather ratchet style belt I bought from an Army/Navy surplus store that I have had for close to 20 years. No issues. Works great. Infinitely adjustable too. Women can never figure out how to get it off, is the only downside. blush

I have two or three full grain leather belts that I picked up at a thrift store. Typically $5, or less, and I cut them to length and punch holes where I need them. They'll outlast me.

I bought a leather belt 10 years ago and it's still doing fine. Full grain is important. I believe mine might be a Nicks boots belt but not 100% sure.

I have no idea where my belt came from.  I guessing Target, Kohls, etc.  I assure you it was the cheapest one on the rack.  Its around 16 years old?

What is the failure mode of a typical belt?
