If needed I might have some free time 31st/1st.

Each one is different. One near me had the famous exam table but a lot of appliances also. The one near my mom is pretty much a thrift shop.
The one here is mostly furniture and some books and records. I was scanning over things quickly since it was almost closing time, but I didn't personally see building materials - although my wife said she saw a lady buying two gallons of paint so I know they're there. We'll have to check them out, definitely.

I would never ask you to come that far. But once again, you show the kind of person you are - it's very much appreciated! I'll work on step numero uno first, which is getting the car here.

That's was I was going to post- and the proceeds go to a good cause- Habitat for Humanity. Good way to fix stuff getting it there.

Not like I haven't driven further to do other stuff. Road trips are fun. I can show up with a jack, tools, four jack stands, and a willingness to point to bolts you need to remove.

I'll be doing the oil pan in the near future. If that doesn't work out and it's something else I might take you up on that.
So I wanted to come in here and talk about some hard truths about the situation but that's been covered pretty well already so I'll just mention that i agree with the following points
1. What's been said about the decision about having a kid.
2. What's been said about you bringing up stepsister and the possiblity of that weighing into stepmom's reaction
3. What's been said about using mental energy trying to diagnosis stepmom with mental issues, that just generally isn't a thing you should do with anyone.
Ok now this...
I'm 38. I don't have kids and I probably won't at this point, but I understand the feeling. I also understand the desire to go to school as I'm looking into the same. But you need a few things right now. Self-awareness, sense of responsibility, and clarity of mind. Oh and that thing that no one under 40 seems to have anymore, Patience.
1. Are you choosing the career path and schooling because that's where you want to be for the rest of you working life? Or is it something you see as a good "means to an end" for future plans when it comes to Canada and other plans. Our parents were ok with making work "the thing you hate but it pays for the things you like" but look at how they turned out. Yeah with the kid on the way it seems even more practical to make the smart decision, but hating what you'll spend most of your adult like doing is bad for all your personal relationships.
1a. If computer networking is the thing you want to do, is college the only way or the best way to get there?
2.Are you in that area solely because that's where Dad's house was? How long is your lease? If you relax on the classes and bit the bullet for the length of the lease and save can you gtfo of that area when the lease is up? Maybe you can then relocate somewhere with better opportunity.
3.Talk to your spouse, no I mean really talk. It's easy for us guys to think practical and not talk about things we'd really want to do because we've mentally already excluded it from possibility. Also, sometimes one partner gets crushed under the weight of the other partner's dreams and plans and/or schemes so make sure she is totally on board and not just wanting to be with you to the point she'd go along with whatever.
D.Make sure you are surrounding yourself with people that are a) positive (attitudes not COVID) and b) willing to tell you when you're berkelying up your life. drop people that are being negative (not necessarily completely or forever)

We are in this area because dads house is here, yes. He invited us to live here when we lost our jobs and house due to Covid shutdowns. The problem with dropping classes and focusing on other things is that I'll stop getting the GI Bill monthly stipend - that's $899/month. Also jobs here, other than medical and construction, suck. My best hope of getting out is finishing school and working now, and once I finish school try to find an entry level IT job in a surrounding city.
Also, good news: the bit of stocks I sold finally cleared, and the transfer to my bank finally went through. Now I have a bit of cash in my checking account and I can take a breath.
infinitenexus said:Saron81 said:Do you have connections in Baltimore still? The job and housing market is usually a lot better here than most places in Florida. The NSA (and other government jobs) is even close!
We left Baltimore because the crime is crazy high, housing prices are high, taxes are high, and schools are bad unless you're rich. There's some excellent food and drink in Baltimore, but that's about it.
I didn't mean Baltimore city... I wouldn't recommend that to anyone! The suburbs can still be ok though. The county I work in is consistently in the top school districts in the country, and had been named the best place to live in the US. Those high taxes and high housing costs go hand in hand with the high(er) salaries paid around here. I drive almost 100 miles a day because of the pay. Just a suggestion as I've seen my brother move to (and away from) Florida twice now after struggling down there.
In reply to Saron81 :
Once I get better job skills that would be a viable option. I just need to finish school, then I'll be good.
I didn't mean drop them entirely. Just don't forego full time gainful employment for schooling for a career you may not truly want. Make sure it's what you really want before just using the system to get income.
In reply to minivan_racer :
It's definitely the career path I want to take. I think the hardest part of it will be finding an entry level IT job once I'm qualified. I've searched around here before and it looks like I'll be commuting a good distance away to find anything decent.
Initially around here though, pretty much my only choice is a crappy job. But hey, more money is more money. If I'm lucky I'll be able to get something that'll contribute to my resume a bit.
Could you move away from the Sebring area sooner rather than later? I live up in Gainesville and it's growing by leaps and bounds. Plus - lots of Publix stores here so your wife should be able to transfer. And a VA hospital in town. And a phenomenal community college (Santa Fe) that just happened to get a $40M(!) donation from Mackenzie Scott.
This is a local company that is growing like wildfire in the IT training space (ITProTV). Could you use your GI benefits with their training course?
All that to say you might have much better opportunities up here but still be in FL.
We're in a 1 year lease in our crack house here. We would definitely like to leave the area - the only thing we really like here is the racetrack. Around the time our lease is up I should be finishing school so a move is a very attractive option. There's no IT jobs here anyways so moving to where I can get a job is probably what'll happen.
Some good news - we went to our WIC appointment today and got a card. Some of the food it covers drives me nuts - like it'll cover multiple gallons of sugar filled juice - but we got some healthy foods like tuna and fruits and veggies and a big old block of cheese, which helps a ton with groceries. Anyways, the nutritionist I spoke to is also a disabled vet and she told me I should be receiving a much higher percentage. She gave me the number to a lawyer she used, so I'm going to call her tomorrow. She said this lawyer got her from 60% to 90% in about 6 months - usually getting your percentage adjusted takes 2+ years. So that's something I'll pursue. We also got a loveseat for cheap from the habitat house - we also checked for things like paint, but they only had weird colors. We got a vacuum for $15 which helps, but neither one of us will touch this carpet barefoot. Next up we'll be waiting on Facebook marketplace for a free desk. Tomorrow I should be getting the mustang towed here as well, so I can start dealing with that nightmare.
Also I called MD unemployment again and I think I've narrowed down what the problem is - they've tried to send me nearly $7k in backpay now but the payments keep getting rejected. The unemployment office doesn't send payment themselves, they send it through Bank of America. Looks like the main problem is they never bothered opening an account for me with Bank of America, so none of the payments are getting properly processed. I'll try to get them on the phone again tomorrow (usually takes around 20-30 calls before you can get a person on the line, sometimes more) and hopefully I'll be one step closer.
Thanks everyone
Sounds like you're making good progress, keep it up. I use Trello (free website/ app) to make lists and track my progress with projects. It feels good to put stuff in the "Done" pile.

I agree, it's going to be one-foot-in-front-of-the-other for a little while, but it seems like you're shuffling the right direction, keep it up!
I'll second Trello, it's a great free program for project management.
Guess I'm signing up for trello!
Last night we had to call the cops on our trashy neighbors. We heard one of their children screaming and crying and a woman's voice yelling "there you stupid berkeleying piece of e36 m3, are you going to do it again? How about now?" And we could hear her hitting the kid. Craziness.
I called to set up an appointment to have my mustang towed tomorrow morning. They don't really do that, they said just call on the morning haha. I figure the earlier the better. I'd rather not see or deal with my parents for a good long while.
also there's no heat in our crack house and it's 43 degrees this morning, so time to bundle up! Next month we might have to budget for a cheap space heater, just not one that'll burn the place down

Ovens can make a lot of heat FYI. It's usually not the most efficient way to heat a room, but it beats freezing.
Glad to hear you're making some progress in a lot of areas too. Keep it up! Things will eventually settle down a bit and you can catch your breath

This.
I live on wood heat and sometimes I'm lazy and just open the oven for awhile to take the edge off
