The old days they'd call out the engine was steam cleaned.

What's the best way?  Battery on the left, electronics on the right, coil packs, wires.......

I don't want to just pressure wash it all - armor all and a rag is my go to - what's the best way to clean this?

Dry ice blasting. Article about the process over at the Classic Motorsports site: Dry ice blasting: A better way to clean that project?

Isn't that kind of pricey?

I'd just use a gentle spray pattern with a hose and some all-purpose cleaner. It's always worked well for me, and I've never had any trouble with electronics.

I still use a pressure washer, just avoid spraying right at the specific electronic bits.  Other areas I do with a spray bottle of simple green and a brush and a hose sprayer.  It all seems to work well.

Side question, what gentle cleaner?  I normally use gunk as the cleaner, but if there is something better- either for cleaning and/or for the drainage.

Simple green is my go-to, works well, especially if it sits for a bit, lots less toxic than most degreasers.

Another vote for Simple Green, albeit not the original formula, which is mildly corrosive to aluminum, but this stuff: Simple Green Pro HD.

Just reinforcing 02Pilot's comment - original Simple Green will corrode aluminum, but the other stuff won't.
