So, considering a sort of charity buy of a 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid for a college student friend. Vehicle has 135,000 miles, a few dings and dents but a pretty nice interior, and can be obtained for sofa cushion money.
Only negative seems to be a "wonky" transmission.
Does anybody have any experience with these? I'm not afraid of the purchase price, heck I could lose that much in a poker game. What I want to avoid is finding that it needs a transmission or more, or that these things self-destruct. I can't in good conscience give this student a car and then have it suck up a bunch of money on repairs. I'm pretty much assuming it needs brakes and some other stuff, as it's currently wearing a 9/2020 inspection sticker.
As stated, it's a 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid with 135k miles and a wonky transmission. Advice?

The original question is more than a month old. Did you buy the Honda Civic Hybrid?
Did your question really garner no response at the time asked?
All I know is whatever hybrid batteries Honda used were not great and didn't live long.
I would have answered had this not been in off topic.
On the off chance anyone cares at this point: My wife had one when we met. It had transmission issues... I think it was a CVT IIRC. It shuddered during acceleration. The local hybrid shop hated them. But they did have a trick where they would deglaze the clutch or flywheel or something by running it for a while on a lift with the brake on. It sounded insane to me, but it worked, at least for a while.
Otherwise, I liked it for what it was. I mean, a Prius is better in most ways, but if it's there.
