Or to put it more succinctly: the despondency of losing a job is giving way to the terror of traversing unknown territory of trying to carve out my own niche rather than just looking around for someone else to offer me "the right thing".

Finding a career, that is, a long term job that makes you happy while paying the bills, is very difficult these days. There is just so much demand in nearly every industry while hiring managers and human resource professionals believe that they need certain types of individuals to fill roles that in reality, multitudes of people could do well at.

Going back to the "routine oriented personality" and the "variety minded personality", folks like us who crave variety try to gain education or experience in things that we think will make us happy for a lifetime. Unfortunately sometimes the thing that we enjoy learning about or even doing in our free time is not the same thing that we will want to do for the rest of our lives.

To make things more complicated, sometimes you get in a situation where you love the job, but for whatever reason the job doesn't fit your life. It's an hour away. It's 3rd shift. It doesn't pay well enough. It's only seasonal. The job exists in your current location but not in the location where you want to live.

I think that's the most stressful thing about career choice, it's not the current career, its the future career. Will I look back on my career as the job that allowed me to live my life, or the job that kept me from doing the things I wanted to do?

Thats the trouble with taking the first job that's offered to you. It may pay the bills, but you'll leave after a year. On the flip side, you may spend a lifetime searching for the perfect job that never fits your life (or personality).

I just stumbled across this thread....thinking about you man. Not much to add, it looks like the last page and a half are full of better advice than I could muster.

How is the market for "knowledgeable bartender"?

Probably not too bad. That is definitely one of my backup plans if I'm not able to put something else together in another month or two. I'm sure I'd enjoy bartending too, just the hours kind of suck.

I wouldn't be able to make it until 5:30 or so counting time to drive there after work.

How late would you think you guys might be there? I NEVER have Friday's off, but if I work an AM shift that day, I could probably get down there by about 5:30.

If other folks aren't going to be there until 5:30, maybe use early folks should aim to arrive around 5pm or something.

I'll be there between 5 and 5:30! I gotta work 6AM-3PM, but I'll head there directly after work. Just in case, would anyone have a couch I(+possible friend) could crash on? I have saturday off, so I just might enjoy myself 'too much' if this place turns out to be especially delightful. If a friend ends up coming with me,I'd imagine myself leaving pretty early in the AM, like 7AM at the latest. If not, I could probably see which friends live in the area and would let me stay with them.

I'm planning to be there but my wife's out of town at the moment and she's the one that remembers if we have already made plans. I'll check with her but hopefully see you guys there!

Also posted about a crapcan racer gathering at Byrne's pub on Thursday; read about it here:

Okay. So, 5-ish at The Pint Room.

I may have a spare bed available, but will have to check with SWMBO before inviting guests over.

I'm late to the thread here, and I don't have a lot to add.

I've stood at the same crossroads you are more than one in my life- if you keep your eyes open and follow your heart you will find the right direction to go in.

If you decide on consulting I have a good friend that recently started a brewery in Hudsonville, MI. I'd be happy to lead you his way.

Ha! Yes, Billy White.

We've been friends since we were kids. I have yet to make it over to the White Flame...
