My macbook has refused to boot all week. Finally took it into the Apple store today since I had some time and it is under warranty. They said it was probably a fried logic board and it would be covered under warranty.
They just called back and said they found liquid damage when they opened it up and the logic board, optical drive, and wireless card are all fried. Even better, it isn't covered under warranty. Quote was $750 for the repair

Google up the word Hackintosh

Can a hackintosh be done in a Macbook body? I.E. could I buy parts to fix mine that would be cheaper/better than getting the original components?
Did you spill liquid on it?

I never did but it was sitting on the coffee table in my living room so one of my roommates could have when I wasn't around.
Oh, that's too bad. I'd look on eBay for replacement parts, Macbooks are easy to work on, at least IMHO.

Yea if I can find the parts for a reasonable price I'll just fix it myself. I have a desktop so I'm not really in a hurry to get it fixed.
To fix the macbook, you'll need an apple logic board. optical drives are commodities. Buy whichever one seems fast and reliable in your budget. Macs don't do anything special as far as optical drives. Same with hard drives.
Wireless card -- I dunno. It may be a commodity part, it may be some special apple thing.
Anyways, if you can score a motherboard and wireless card somewhere, the drive should be under a hundy and you could build the whole thing back up for a few hundred bucks.
But if it were me, I'd consider it toast. You can get a new refurb MacBook Pro or MacBook Air straight from Apple for 1100. Or a brand new MacBook for 1000. For 250-350 bucks, I'd say to hell with it and just get the new, fast machine. And keep it the hell away from my roommates.
