That's a good one. Very upgradeable and should run quickly - my wife has one of those. You can rely on Crucial for the right info on the RAM - I have 16 GB in my mid-2012 15" Macbook and I'm pretty sure that's what I put in hers as well. Let me know if you want specific product recommendations for the SSD and optical drive replacement parts.

Hey I know there's been a lot on here already but I track stats on every computer I upgrade at work or at at home, including quite a number of Macbooks, from 2008 models on up.
I want to be as clear as possible with this: A solid state drive will cut off EIGHTY PERCENT of your load time across the board.
Apparently for years we were just wasting our time with RAM and processor upgrades when it was the hard drive all along. I mean, if you're finding that load times suffer once you have a lot open and then open up your activity monitor and see you're out of RAM then yes, you need to upgrade that too, but by and large 8GB is fine for almost everyone.
Here's the best, most reliable one: https://smile.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1548482522&sr=8-3&keywords=samsung+evo
RAM installed. It's a bit faster. Gonna try it for a few days and see it it's better.
Does anybody have this Crucial 500gb SSD - costs $58!

Yep, its in an older HP laptop I have. It works well, the speed gain it over the 4200rpm drive it replaced was quite noticeable, even with Win 7 loaded. Dropping Win 7 for Xubuntu made a huge difference in boot time as well.
I've added similar SSDs to other systems and it has made a noticeable difference. The caveats about storing and backing up critical data are all too true, but for a portable system or a desktop with multiple drives its a fair trade-off.
I've got one or two MX500s in some of my machines here, plus I have a few older Crucial drives as well. They seem to work pretty well. To be fair I had one that was DOA but Crucial sorted that out under warranty.
I don't see any reason not to buy one.
